Protein Ideas PLEASE!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I am new to this world, and trying to get as much info as possible. Right now I am in the middle of my 6 month diet plan required by my insurance; I am hoping to get sleeved by the end of this summer! So here is where I need your help and expertise: I need ideas for foods high in Protein, to have post-op. I know I will do Protein shakes, but would also like to focus my food choices on those that are high in Protein. Here is my dilemma: I am really picky. I do not like cheese, yogurt, or any seafood. I cannot stomach chicken-tuna-egg-ham salad. I do like meats, scrambled eggs, Beans, and Peanut Butter. Anything else I am missing? I am really nervous about this, thanks for any and all advice you can give!

Welcome!! I'm 3 weeks out today. The first week my doctor had me on a liquid diet. Then I could have some creamed Soups NO PIECES the second week. I didn't like yogurt either but now I'm a HUGH fan of Yoplait LIGHT FAT FREE...Boston Cream Pie, Lemon Cream Pie, and RED VELVET Cake. Baked fish is good. Wait until after surgery once you can have some of these food. Well I don't know if my taste buds changed but they taste WONDERFUL! LOL The start of my 3rd week is when I could have eggs. Now my NUT told me I can't have shrimp until I'm 6 wks out....I think because of the texture and how my new stomach has to process it.

Once you are deprived of food for a while you will start to appreciate anything you can have. I'm in my MUSHIE stage so last night I took left over Roasted chicken and put in my blender with one egg and just a little LIGHT mayo and some mustard and made a chicken salad. Added a little pepper and it was WONDERFUL! Now I can only eat a little bit of it so I have plent for lunch today and supper tonight. IF my daughter doesn't eat it first. She tried it and LOVED it too! I know you said you don't like this but like I said once you have your surgery and you can't eat food you may find out you do like it. Because it is SOMETHING TO EAT! LOL OH and Mrs Butter-worths sugar free Syrup is the BOMB!! It is SO GOOD....NEVER thought I would say something sugar free was so good! LOL

GOOD LUCK!!!!

I have to agree with HopeandFaith. I was sleeved last week (Jan. 26) and am still on a liquid diet, which I was for 5 days prior to my surgery, too. I didn't think I would like broth. I've never been a big meat eater. Snubbed my nose at it the whole pre-surgery diet. Had it in the hospital day after surgery - LOVED IT!!! I think b/c it was something different to eat. I can see myself liking things I never thought I would just like the above post says. I can't start my pureed phase until next week - but can totally see myself pureeing what the family is eating for dinner, which pre-surgery I didn't know what I was going to do, as I couldn't fathom liking something like that!!! It's all different afterwards!!!!! But if you have a lactose intolerance, or are just super fussy - talk to a nutritionist. They will be able to help you find the best foods. Good Luck!

Thanks ladies! I hope you are right, that maybe my tastes will broaden a bit. I have heard greek yogurt is a good choice, haven't tried that yet. Good luck to you!

I found that unflavored Protein power was really helpful. I could mix it in to Soups and other foods I could eat during the mushie stage and get more protein in that way.

Cottage cheese is really high in Protein. Add some salt and pepper to liven it up or just a couple of tsp of mashed potato's and it tastes awesome. Have you looked at vegan type foods? I like to eat this stuff called veggie ground round. Its a root plant that takes on the flavour of meat and has protien in it. We get this in Canada and would be pretty sure you would get it in the states too. I would google food with protien and check them out that way.

I'm about six weeks out and finally eating whatever I want more or less.

As soon as my liquid stage was over I pretty much ate the same things for every meal. I started with a Protein shake to give me a good start and then lived on Soups, cottage cheese and scrambled eggs for the rest of the day. It seemed much easier and more enjoyable to just eat something I knew wouldn't make me sick and that I liked.... If I needed more Protein at the end of the day I would have a nice treat by adding a huge scope of unflavored Protein powder into a sf snack pack pudding. I had no problems getting my protein in.

Of course, it's better to get your protein from food but when you're healing and restricted - powders are fine. I had planned on trying to puree meat and all that but I just never got around to it because I was perfectly happy with what I was eating.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
