I was the same way. I was petrified! My friend was so happy for me and all I kept thinking was "Don't be that way, what if something horrible happens!"

About a week before the surgery I just told myself "Buckle up and put your blinders on--don't look to the right or to the left, just go for it."

All has gone well so far except that I am on a very long stall. I am most amazed at my lack of appetite. It makes it so easy to eat small amounts.

Hang in there, it is all worth it!

I was scared.... but don't let it change your mind.... I am SO pleased I had this done, don't regret it for a second, and wish I'd only done it sooner.... I have a new life now, am fitter, look great (hubby keeps on telling me.. and can't keep his hands off me....) and have much more confidence in myself.

I won't deny that there are moments when I think about the future and how I'll cope being older with a teeny tiny tummy.. but by then things will seem normal that I eat small portions, rather than the huge ones I used to.

You only get one life... live it to the best way that you can.....I think the sleeve will enable you to do this. Good luck.

Hang in there. I was not scared at all. I knew I could never do this on my own. I was sleeved Dec 1st and can't wait to get to the finish line. I started at 232 lbs at my first dr appt, I am now down to 185.4 lbs. I have not weighed this since 1988. My health has improved and today my husband and I hiked to a waterfall. I never could had done that if I never had surgery. This is the next step in a wonderful journey.

Well despite Klus's comment below most of us are scared sh**less right up to the op and usually have an episode afterwards too. It is completely NORMAL. It's a BIG decision and a BIG change. Just stick with it, it will work for you.

MustangAli - I had a couple middle of the night 'should we spend the $$' but I was never scared of following through with the surgery for any reason other than the money aspect! I was self pay!! I have NEVER had one second of "buyers remorse" - it is THE single best decision I've made in my life. It's been disgustingly easy, the tricky part is stopping the weight loss....at least for me. I don't think maintaining and all is as easy for everyone, we are all different, but so far it's been easy, although I still FEAR waking up and having gained 10 lbs and having pre-op hunger!! Crazy stuff...when will it end??!!

From what I have read, and I follow this forum closely, and have for over a year now....unless you have an eating disorder, that makes it more difficult - the sleeve is a great tool for weight loss and it is NOT hard if you follow your surgeon's advice. As with any weight loss surgury, you can fail or re-gain, but from my experience, with this restriction and loss of hunger....you can't help but lose weight. Good luck, I can't imagine you'll be sorry if you follow through.

Please know IT IS MUCH HARDER BEFORE THE SURGERY THAN AFTER!!! REALLY!! Once you have the surgery you will probably be like me and say "Really? That was it?" The night before my surgery I was like a caged animal. I could not drink my laxative b/c I kept thinking "if I drink this it means I am sealing the deal". Well after having a minor hissy-fit, I drank it and handled the rest like a trouper. I was still scared, but when I woke up in my room I was happy. Sore, a little, but mostly happy. It really isn't that big of a deal. Define what you are afraid of and maybe then you can talk yourself some logic. :) (Although that didn't work for me.) I just kept in my mind that I was so unhappy being so overweight and tired of worrying about my health that this was going to be my lifesaver. And so far, so good....23 lbs gone in two weeks, off insulin and no more leg pains. Trust in what you know will be the right thing for YOU.

Well only you can change your own feelings however, i would like to tell you this . . . this was my 18th major surgery I'm allergic to narcotics and can only take vicodans for pain . . . i have survived all 18 surgeries and can sit here and tell you about it. . . yes each surgery i was freaked out with, normal feelings, but would you really give up the opportunity to finally be thin because of fear? Here are some words of wisdom from Robert F. Bennett. . .

"A desire to be in charge of our own lives, a need for control, is born in each of us. It is essential to our mental health, and our success, that we take control"

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

I felt a bit nervous before mine too, so yes it's very normal to feel this way right before the big cut.

But... what I reminded myself of, I was MORE scared of staying obese and continue to gain more weight - and getting more and more unhealthy. I really hated myself like that!!! Why lie?? I was miserable, and though I tried my dangedest to stay on the positive side, it bothered me a lot. Staying that way, to me is far more scary than having a surgery that was going to save me from a lifetime of misery.

Good luck to you... ultimately it is YOUR decision on what you want/need to do for yourself. I just want you to know once you get to the other side, all those feelings will fade when you see just how AMAZING the sleeve really is. ;)

Hello - what do you fear? Surgery or the fact that you are changing?

Want to echo previous thoughts - it is much harder prior to surgery. Those nagging doubts, what if I fail again, it costs so much (I was a self pay in US) the other what ifs...

What other options do you have to take control of your life? VSG will change the way your live. I was happy before VSG, but now my happiness is magnified. I move more, I laugh more, smile more, walk more, socialize more and take care of myself more. Decide to make yourself a priority. I am healthier, happier and more productive in so many ways. No regrets - amazed at results at under 5 months out surpassing surgeons goal, less than 7 pounds from my personal goal. Good luck on breaking away from the old and becoming the real you.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself...Franklin D Roosevelt

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
