I have gout. It's very painful.

I really hope that the weight loss from the sleeve helps eradicate it.

Anyone have experience with this?

I was trying things for my upcoming clear diet and made and ate some Miso Soup and it triggered a gout flare. I guess it was the high salt and the bean curd.

I don't think that would have any effect. The reason you get gout is because you either consume too much uric acid or don't excrete it well enough (90% of people with gout have the latter problem). It is linked to diet - back in the days, this was one of the rich people's diseases, because only the very rich could afford to eat so much meat and seafood in their diets that they'd actually accumulate such high levels of uric acid. If your post-sleeve diet resulted in a drastically limited intake of foods high in uric acid, your gout might improve, but weightloss alone probably won't do anything for it. Your doctor should've given you a list of foods to stay away from. Still, it doesn't solve the problem entirely, as flare-ups are not always linked to your serum uric acid levels - some people have flare-ups when their serum uric acid levels are within normal.

I just found out through my pre-op blood tests that I have it. It must be in my knees only, because I dont have any problems with my feet. I went to my surgeon's orientation last night and gout was on his list as being improved with WLS. I am guessing its because of diet changes.

I had a gout flare-up two weeks before surgery about the time I started the low calorie diet. I was OK the first week, but once I had to stop ibuprofen I was in hell. I finally went to urgent care after two days of tylenol and got a prescription for 3 colchacine pills. This stopped the flare up temporarily. The night before surgery I could not sleep because of the pain. The surgeon prescribed a three week dose. I took it the first day home and then forgot it for three days. I finally got back on it , starting with 3 pills the first day and one a day after that. I was on the pain meds for longer than needed because of the gout flare-up. Two weeks out and the gout is finally settling down. The surgeon said the gout flare-up was probably from dehydration.

I had a similar flare in the hospital after surgery and took some colchine. It's ok now and the doctor said to now get off the colchicine because it restricts healing. However, he said the Uloric I take is alright. Uloric lowered my Uric Acid to acceptable levels. No flareups since and I am a week and a half out of VSG surgery and doing well.

Update.

I have now had two gout flares in 2 weeks. The second one really bad. I was sleeved 4 weeks ago. I am beginning to think hydration is the isse. However, at 4 weeks I am now starting my Omega-3 and Tart Cherry extract again which prior to surgery really helped the gout. I am continuing the Uloric (40mg) and use Colchicine when I get a flare.

My arthritis pain has increased also, and I am going to ask if I can start up the Arthrotec again even though it is an NSAID.

Interestingly, even though my Uric Acid is in acceptable range I still get the attacks. That is why my doctor won't increase the Uloric from 40mg to 80 mg. So it appears not to be a high Uric acid level.

I have not had my surgery, but the TWO times I lost over 100 lbs. And reached my goal (normal) weight, I stopped taking allopurinol for my gout.

Both times my gout immediately flared up.

May it will different for you.

Good luck.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
