Tastes buds change?

Recommended Posts

I'm post op day 10 and am on full liquids. I love milk. Now when I try to drink milk it tastes rotten in my mouth and I can hardly stand to drink it. Has anyone else had a change in their taste buds this early?

The change in taste sometimes is due to anesthetic. It should get better down the road as you progress. But I have heard several post sleevers commenting on taste change for them. I think some said that it went away after awhile. I am not fully sure. I am sure one of the veterans will be able to better answer you.

My taste buds totally changed after surgery. I would say after 3 months everything was back to normal :)

I'm close to 2 months out and EVERYTHING tastes off to me yet. I am really turned off of food and can barely finish nearly all my meals. Things I THINK will taste good just don't. Hormel's Turkey chili is the only thing that really tastes good to me.

I hope that it does clear up but in a way I hope that it won't. In the past I really had a problem with food and really porked out. I am willing to put up with this if it aids me in reducing and keeping my weight off.

I'm so glad someone asked this question! I'm a little over 4 weeks out and I'm having the same problem. Everything tastes off to me to the point it's difficult to eat much. I'm hoping food gets a bit more enjoyable....not that I want to over induldge, but I'd like to enjoy the little bit I eat.

The first few days my mouth tasted like ashes, and I could not tolerate sweets. I can now tolerate sweets, but less so than before. My mouth sometimes tastes like old sock now... perhaps from ketosis. I am also taking actigaul, which is a bitter medicine, three times a day with meals, so this is not helping. I can tell that my slightly altered taste buds will be ok, they are still changing and it seems in the direction of enjoying my food taste more... I just hope I never get that addictive craving I MUST have that taste in my mouth thing again... Its just not worth it. I have been perusing "food porn" cooking sites, and checking out and saving recipes that look like they will work well and taste good when I can eat the ingredients and texture in the future... I do get a little worked up while doing this, but not out of bounds, just arming myself with some good tasty choices... who knows how they will really taste to me when I get to them....

Definitely! I'm almost three months out now, and things are definitely starting to get back to normal. I'm with Rootman. It's bittersweet. It's nice to be able to eat a wider variety of foods, but I kind of wish I still thought everything tasted nasty. ;)

I had the same issue with milk. It has not gotten any better (I am only 22 days out). In fact, I have developed lactose intollerance to milk only thank goodness. But things do still taste different. I tried shrimp, one of my favorite foods, and it was just ok. I saw a commercial for Wendy's and was drooling over the (wait for it...) Tomato! Not the bread, cheese, meat or lettuce, the Tomato. I don't even like tomatoes!! Go figure.

My way of dealing with these things is to remember that I divorced the Fat Girl the moment I lost 85% of my stomach. Things are going to be different without her nagging!!

Four months out here and things have started to taste like they did before. Started ... I got by by eating foods with BOLD flavors. Extra sharp cheese, blue cheese, chili ... the bolder the better. I was in severe ketosis, which, I think we all go through in the beginning. It will cause acetone to form in the mouth. That is why food in the beginning tastes like (rhymes with grit). Upping your carbs will help with that, but be sure you are getting your Protein in as well.

I don't think some foods will ever taste the same, though. I had a spoonful of mashed potatoes and gravy the other night and it was terrible. So sad ... but, in reality, it is a good thing. I could do terrible damage to a pan of mashed potatoes and gravy pre-op.

Hmmm. I am 10 months out and two of my favorites pre-op I still cannot tolerate: coffee & potato chips

I was a pot & half a day coffee drinker, seriously.. I loved my coffee. I was sleeved, avoided coffee, got healed up, doc said o.k. to one cup a day and WOW.. I cannot drink the mud! I have tried several times and just cant tolerate the taste. Potato Chips - my best friend.. Ruffles & I had a nightly affair pre-op.

Post op, I must admit I have tried to test the waters and would eat one...the first couple of times I spat it out, could not get past the taste of grease. I tried a couple more times and same thing, all I taste is grease and salt. YUCK... Ruffles & I are no longer freinds.

I'm a few days away from being 6 months out. I can't tolerate greasy foods and can eat only a little of sweet foods. I used to love BBQ ribs but now they are a bit too greasy and don't sit just perfect. When I eat popcorn, I don't add butter. I also avoid extra acidic foods. I drink orange juice, but just a couple of ounces, not even 1/2 cup. Same thing with acidic fruit, such as strawberries. I eat only about 1/4 cup at a time. And I don't drink straight espresso anymore. I have soy lattes now (6 grams of Protein in 6 ozs!). When I eat sweets, I have a mini version or share it with someone because a few bites is enough.

I'm three months and things still taste like crap. I can't eat any thing with oil all I taste is grease. And there is something in dairy that I can not tolerate. I do hope this gets better.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
