OMG! You will love Dr. Turnquest! He has been phenomenal and he is very well respected. Maybe our paths will cross in his office one day! I think I have an appointment March 26!

I do LOVE him he's so nice and personable! I'm scheduled for the 22nd and I have to see him a week after that. Ok, just wondering...did he put you on a liquid diet before the surgery? Because he told me I didn't need to go on one but every other Doctor told me at least 10 days of liquids pre-op. I just found the a little odd so please let me know if that's normal?

I didn't have a pre-op (or post-op) liquid diet. My surgeon (well, all the doctors/surgeons in my clinic) is not a fan of liquid diets, in nearly any context. (Also, I know may people allude to fatty liver and shrinking it and all that -- but it in fact takes much longer than a week or two to shrink an actual fatty liver.) I hypothesize that it's actually more to do with compliance and patient readiness than physical reasons. But this is all just my opinion and I am not a doctor. ;)

Hi, McKee! I am having the sleeve done by Dr Wilkenfeld on the 13th. How are you enjoying your experience? I'm going from a band to sleeve revision, and I'm actually more nervous about this than I was with the band.

Good luck with your sleeve process!

Hi I am just actually beginning my process I am one month down of the 6 mos my insurance requires, however I am in the Houston area as well and I also have heard bad reviews of this doctor...I am using Texas Gastric Banding in the Woodlands Dr. Wilkenfled but having trouble finding a place to work with my availablity for the nutritionist appts...True Results is very limited on their times and I am scared to use my pcp because of the specific documentation.

Hi Gloucester,

It's been a while since I made that post...I actually ended up changing to Dr.Balette in the The Woodlands he is part of the Surgrical group of the woodlands.

I just wasn't getting what I expected from the staff at Wilkenfeld. Wish you the best and good luck with your revision.

Small world! I had lapband w/Dr. Balette and I LOVE Cheryl. I moved to Wilkenfeld, though, because Balette couldn't do Barium fills in his office. I loved him as a doctor, though - so good luck to you! :) (Okay, okay...plus Balette is a cutie, so that's a plus!)

My nutritionist is Emily Banes at Houston Northwest Medical Center on 1960. She is really good! Give her a try.

Hi everyone my name is McKenna. I have gone to UT Physicians off 610 S. In Bellaire for my surgery. Dr. Eric Wilson did my first one, Dr. Todd Wilson will be doing my second one which will be my revision to the sleeve.

To the person who started this post I have heard of Dr. Spiegel And I have done sided I would never go to him based on other reasons you can inbox me later If you wish on this topic.

I chose UT physicians because they are a center of excellence. Through any of my processes I have not had a bad experience whatsoever. I would like to go through this thread and read all earlier conversations but I have not at this time. I also look forward to meeting with anybody in any groups that you guys have thank you

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
