How do you get veggies into your pureed and soft food diets?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am dying for a salad (so not like me). I am 4 weeks out and am on pureed food and then soft foods. Aside from canned green Beans - how do you guys get veggies into your diets?

Also, will I be able to eat fresh veggies when I am off soft foods?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I was at the mall and looked at SaladWorks and salivated!! I know the feeling. I am 23 days out on mushy foods. Other than a baked potato or sweet potato, I have had no veggies yet. I can't get them in after I eat my Protein. One more week until I can start transitioning to solids and I can't wait. This has been the longest month of my life :)

At these stages you probably are getting 0 to minimal fruits and veggies in. Thta is why it is soooooooooooo important to take your Vitamins, stay hydrated, and get in as much Protein as you can.

Hard to believe we crave salads now, huh? That used to be "diet" food. ;)

What about V8 and similar veggie drinks? Or get a juicer and puree your fruits and veggies into a drink?

These are good ideas, but you'll want to be careful. There are a lot of carbs in the pre-made drinks and the sugar may upset your tastebuds (some people hate the sweetness after surgery) or your new tummy. If it works for you GREAT! Just make sure to still get in your Vitamins, Water and Protein.

Remember - this is a short period & it will soon be a blur in your memory.

Yup V8 is brillant! But remember I'm out over 1 year now and have forgotten what's it's like to be newly out of surgery. . . so go with what the newer folks say and your doctor!

Thanks all. Very helpful! I appreciate the ideas. Never thought of V8 and I have honestly forgotten to take me Vitamins. Oops! Have to get going with that again.

It is funny how the taste buds change. I am drinking a protien drink that is sickly sweet now (I had to "water" it down with milk) and before it was never too sweet. Don't know why it happens but I'm not going to fight it.

veg baby food....

Also, I make split pea Soup and add in some puree vegs... I make it drinking thin, so it is kind of used like Water... except it has veg and some Protein and Fiber in it.

My doc said I could have creamed spinach. I bought the frozen Green Giant one for the microwave - haven't tried it yet, but hope to this weekend. [/code]

lightly cooked frozen spinach finished with some low fat cream of mushroom Soup with a dash of milk is good. I mix in ground (veggie) meat. ...onion powder, pepper...Yum!

You could use blender to puree fresh veggies that are steamed. Babyfood that is Junior is also good. I like the suggestions given here, and will give those a try after I am out of surgery. My surgery is May 31.

I put my Protein like baked skinless boneless chicken breast into a food processor with a steamed veg I use 2 oz. of protein and 1 oz. veg just so I have more protein then veg and a little stock and blend/chop :) My nut said it was a good idea. I don't get enough veggies like I like but soon enough. I have one more week of pureed foods but I can't wait for a salad :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
