The Vets Didn't Lie

Dr. Ramos Kelly patients: I thought I'd update here since no one is really revisting my other post. As someone who is 2 days out from surgery. I wanted to let you all know that Day 1 is going to be hell. This is not to scare you but more so comfort you. When I woke from surgery I was out of my mind. The gas pain was enough to have me think I was dying. In the midst of the all the dram, one thing popped in my mind... WALK. From the hundreds of post on here, there was one common thread... WALK. So I asked to walk, The nurses thought it was too soon, but Dr. RK said It I could manage itm then let me. Walk I did for 7-10 mins every couple of hours. And gurggling burps later, it got better. While there aren't any words to explain the feeling, I want you to remember what you have been reading on the board for the past few months. Suck it up and ealk (my attempt at tough love) Day 2 is better and Day 3 is great.

Every doctor is different. I know I have heard stories of people experience serious gas pain but not all will have the same experience. I did not have any gas pain at all. But I did take the advice and walked. Our doctor wanted us to walk as soon as possible after we got to our room, within 2 -4 hours and to walk every 2-4 hours. I did the walking almost every hour for 10-15 minutes. I actually ran the battery down in my iv as it was unplugged so often.

I never had any pain, some discomfort over the first week as all the surgical gas moved out of my system but while I was in the hospital I didn't feel a dang thing - that I can remember, ha ha! Here's to the liberal application of pain erasing drugs!! =)

I had quite a bit of pain when I woke up, still in the recovery room, that I can remember well, bad gas pains. After a few hours it wasn't that bad though, it was bearable but just uncomfortable. We all have different pain thresholds so we all experience pain differently

I had the bad pain from gas when I had my gallbladder taken out a few years ago so I know what to expect. At least I will know what it is this time. I was home by myself just miserable popping pain pills as often as I could. Finally fell asleep and was fine and went to my son's football game the next day. So hopefully, this gas will be the same. I have not had surgery yet. I am scheduled for 2/19

But, the advice of walking is GREAT for all kinds of things. It helps get oxygen into your body which helps prevent blood clots (a very real danger after surgery), AND it makes you feel better, and your body starts to feel more "normal." Definitely walk, walk, walk!!!

Walking was also great to pass the time, I got up and walked as much as possible, I do have a high pain threshold though I wasted the whole morphine drip didn't press that button once.

I did take pain killers to fall asleep the first week but that was it.

What I had was more of a discomfort from gas but walking definitely helped ease that feeling.

What hurt me more than anything was that stupid drain. Thank goodness they took in out before I left hospital.

That dreaded drain! After my surgery could not draw a deep breath because I would get a horrible stitch in my side and thought it was from the stitches and incisions. Day 2 they took out the drain - which to me was terribly painful but once it was done I could finally breath again! Now at 11 days post op I have no real pain to speak of unless I swallow to much air and oddly enough when I go to bed at night. I'm a side sleeper and that seems to pull on my insides as they shift but a little bit of pain meds and I can sleep past that. Love all the tips and tricks I've learned lurking on here! Keep them coming

The minute I woke up out of recovery I said, "I need up to pee and walk." The doctors kept telling me that I looked like a girl that didn't have surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
