Trader Joe's Corn Bread Mix

Recommended Posts

So, yesterday we made some very delicious pulled pork in the crock pot. Just 2.5 pounds of pork tenderloins that was on sale, 8 oz. of BBQ Sauce, chopped onions and garlic and 6 hours on low. It was so good, and even though pork tenderloin is probably one of the leanest cuts of meat, it was super moist and juicy and it actually "pulled" itself when I tried to get it out of the pot.

Now, my non-sleeved, non-obese husband needs a bit of carbs on the side and I thought I'd get the Trader Joe's Corn bread mix out. Hubby was nice enough to volunteer doing it and 40 minutes later the house was filled with the beautiful smells of BBQ pork and corn bread. The corn bread was cut into 9 chunks, and I wanted to eat half of it but I ended up eating one whole piece. I mean, it's just one piece, not even a big one and pre-surgery I would have probably munched my way through 2 or three (ok ok, the 2 of us would have eaten the whole pan).

When it came to logging the food, I checked on MFP...Trader Joe's Corn Bread prepared - 1/9 is 290 calories. 2...9...0...calories, for one serving of corn bread.

Kids, cover your ears...WHAT THE MOTHERFATHER BULLCRAPSHIT IS THAT???? 290 calories for a simple piece of corn bread, no cheese added, no butter on top, no nothing but the required ingredients. This is absolutely insane!

Now, don't get me wrong, at the moment, I kinda eat what I want. I believe the small amounts I am eating allow me to NOT have to look for low-"everything" items but allow me to eat normal food for people NOT on a diet. But my a$$ is that calorie rich or what? And it is a piece of bread on the side - something that we would have munched otherwise with some greasy fatty foods!

At least I had my nice and lean pulled pork tenderloin with it, but this is just outrageous to me. It's like eating 3 tablespoons of butter!

Geez...

Yes I learned that cornbread is loaded with calories awhile back while banded. For the smalles piece even... Not to mention, corn really does a number on me scale wise. I really have to stay away from it and anything made from it.

Incredible how things that you don't even imagine are loaded with calories, I dread to think how many calories I was consuming pre-sleeve when I wasn't on a diet. I already counted what I would typically have when I was "dieting" and it was near 3000 cal somedays OMG. I used to be a huge volume eater :o

Wonder if there are some low cal alternatives... I LOVE cornbread (what a surprise!) :)

Did you check the box or just MFP? That seems a little high to me.

I have found some values to be wrong on MFP & always go with the box instead of what members have submitted when it doesn't look right. If in doubt, I always look for entries where information has been confirmed by other members.

Well first thing - I am open to being invited to your house for supper any day! Man, I've really been turned off by food lately after my op but pulled pork and cornbread actually made my mouth water!

Cornbread is loaded with sugar, it has to be or else it tastes nastier than hell without it - and some places server it "plain" without all the sugar, I personally can't stand it.

To show what a bad boy used to be we used to make up a pan of cornbread - the old Jiffy Mix brand which isn't much better than Trader Joe's - and I'd eat it with maple Syrup. Man, talk about good! I'd more than likely barf it up now as sweets just don't cut it for me, but the memories!

BTW: She IS right about the calories: http://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/trader-joes/cornbread

First of all, we must have had the same idea yesterday. We had a pork loin roast that I seasoned and popped in the crock pot. It was delish!B) However, for sides I had broccoli and califlower steamed and my hubby and 2 girls had baked potatoes. Although corn bread would have FIT right into our dinner. lol.

Secondly, I have not ever taken the time to look up corn bread on caloriecount, BUT I have a very good friend who is currently doing WW. And she went to Famous Dave's (BBQ restaurant) about a week ago. She decided to cave and eat one of their cornbread muffins. Figuring it might be 6 points, maybe 7. She went home and entered the data and came up with the shock of her life, 11 points. She was MORTIFIED (just like you felt I'm sure!) at how many calories, etc. were in ONE stinkin' corn muffin.

And last, thanks for posting this, I will make sure anytime I eat corn bread that I REALLY want it and I REALLY enjoy the heck out of it, becuase it will be on my list of things to have "once in a blue moon!"

MAN, I can now say that I miss cornbread. Even at almost 20 months out, with an enormous list of slider foods, cornbread is one thing that does NOT work for me. I can not eat it without discomfort. I've tried on several occasions, prepared several different ways, and to no avail, it just doesn't work. I've crumbled it up in chili or Beans, and BAM within 3 bites, I am done, and stuffed and uncomfortable. I can eat an entire cup of chili or Beans, but give me a few crumbles of cornbread in it, and I'm lucky to in 1/4 of a cup.

Even cornbread stuffing is a no-go for me. . .

Oh yeah, I have honey over it in the past too - also, very nice :-) The pulled pork was REAL easy in the crock pot and It was absolutely restaurant quality. Check this out:

http://www.food.com/recipe/couldnt-be-easier-bbq-pork-tenderloin-crock-pot-317152 (calories are way wrong though)

BBQ sauce: 350 calories (half a bottle, Bulls Eye Kansas)

2.5lbs lean pork tenderloin: 1400 calories

-------------------------------------

Makes about 13 servings, 4oz. each = 135 calories

@Sheila, I don't believe I really can want it "290 calories"-much. It was really nice, but there are a million other things I'd rather treat myself to for 290 calories. It's like the marketing price/value idea - I can spend the "money", but then I want something better.

Hell, most of my complete meals have less than that! It went like "Cornbread 290 calories, BBQ Pulled Pork 130 calories" -- what's wrong with that picture when the side has more than twice as much as the main part of the dish, LOL

That reminds me of when hubby and I were on WW and we were stuck with a flat tire in the city. We got the car to the mechanic to put new tires on but it would be 2 hours. The kids were starving as were we so we went to McAllisters Deli. It seemed to us that the Club sandwhich would be the best bet as it was made with whole wheat toast, turkey, ham, did have bacon and mayo and cheese though. But nothing like deep fried. We split the dang thing and come to find out it was one of the worst things on the menu. We could have each had a meatloaf dinner than 1/2 a club sandwhich. Points wasted so I know what you mean about wasting those those calories, you could have had icecream or some other expensive indulgences.

So, I took the remaining 5 pieces, cut them into quarters, packed them into a box and forced the hubby to take them to work. Let them get fat, I am not eating it anymore.

Husband confessed he had two pieces for Breakfast yesterday and was not happy after I told him the calories. He is only a little overweight but has the luck of the tall. Still, 600 calories of cornbread for Breakfast, LOL

And yeah, it's probably the sugar, they are sweet and have a caramely crunch, but no thanks for me.

@DJackson, I have noticed that the cheese is kicking a lot of sandwiches over the edge...I loved Jimmy John's sandwiches but never had them with cheese.< /p>

I agree with tifykins. Cornbread, any kind, sticks in me! Was so looking forward to cornbread dressing at holidays which was one of my FAVS! Nope, not gonna happen. 6 mos out in Dec and still not going down. Oh well. But, sure not griping, 7 mos out, hit goal, last week and down 97 lbs. 2 below goal, Have noticed I seem to have to put something in me about every 3 hours or get really empty and low blood sugar. Plus I have developed a real liking for Cheez it's. Bad!

Corn is a super high glycemic index food, I should basically never eat it, in any form. Which is a shame because a fresh ear of corn in August, barely boiled, dripping in sweet butter and salt, is pure joy. *sniff*

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
