In my aera he is the only one all others are way up north of me an i cant afford the gas to get there an all the trips i will have to make

Perhaps you should get a second opinion if your doctor is not the only experienced bariatric surgeon in your area

YEAH we just saved you from the bypass.

I just talked with an 80 year old woman who basically has had a sleeve for 30 years. She had bleeding ulcers and it kept being a problem so the doctor cut out a lot of her stomach for that reason. She has lived a long and healthy life - I've known her for years, I just never knew that she had stomach surgery. She and I ate the same lunch, and she could eat more than me and drink more than me. Probably double. But still, basically same surgery. She remembers being on liquids and having trouble getting much food down. This surgery has been done a long time for other reasons. I know someone else that had it to cut out cancer, and she is thin and healthy 15 years later.

She never had a weight problem since I've known her. For her age she is just perfect.

Reasons I chose Sleeve over bypass:

Less risks and complications

Able to take Nsaids

Loss of hunger ( I now have control over what goes in my mouth)

No Vitamin deficiencies

No DUMPING syndrome

Less chance of regain. (some 50 percent of bypass regain all of their weight and then some)

Sleeve is effective for the rest of my life, Rny only for 2 years

Sure I could eat the wrong things with the sleeve, I choose not to, but even if I ate the wrong thing, let me tell ya there is just no room for much food at all and believe it or not even after only about 3 or 4 bites of a meal I am TOTALLY satisfied as if I just had a huge meal.

I really don't know how anyone could eat too much with the sleeve as that one bite too much causes instant discomfort and then the food has to go!

Hi, From my understanding the sleeve was first put into play as a safer way to do WLS on those who have super high BMIs. Depending on your results the bypass may or may not be needed. It sounds like your surgeon is trying to do this as safely as possible.

FallenAngel - I have a little advice....only worth what you're paying for it! ;) First of all, for me personally, I did not consider by-pass simply because I know 9 people who have had RNY and all but one started gaining their weight back within three years. Of course nobody gained ALL of it back but some gained enough back that they are wanting to have another procedure done to 'tighten' it back up. Ugh. There are a couple of people I know of through friends that never got close to goal, which was unfortunate. I have to say, I knew NOBODY personally who'd had the sleeve, but I followed this forum for six months...obsessively. There are not "long term" stats, but I can tell you that I am very optimistic about keeping the weight off. Right now I am fighting to STOP losing and just maintain!

At some point, I think THIS surgery will become the 'gold standard' for WLS. That said....if by-pass surgery is what you want....I think you can find a surgeon that will do it. Shop around. I would not settle. Had Dr. Davidson not wanted to do the sleeve and had said he wanted to do the band and insisted, or suggested doing RNY just because - I'd have thanked him and gone to Dr. Nicholson or one of the other doctors in Dallas. It's your body.....you should take their advice, listen to the reasons, but in the end, it's your decision.

hi I am new here , to this site my Dr. gave it to me yesterday . he wants me to have the sleeve an i want Gastric bypass but he says my BMI is too much an he al;so wants me to lose 100lbs before he does the sleeve , I have already lost from 545 to 503 , but he still wants me to lose 100 more lbs . I'm doing the protine drink , ( NASTY ) but still trying , i want this so bad i want to be able to watch my 2 sons grow up an see my grandkids with out surgery it wont happen I will eat my self to death so i could really use some postive feedback about the sleeve ,I know you dont lose as much weight as with the bypass . My Dr. also said it coul,d be turned into the bypass later but i really dont want to go threw 2 surgeries . My BMI is 77.5 i think .

Thanks

Crystal Brayfield

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
