I'm supposed to buy a maternity belt ...

Recommended Posts

I've been reading this board for a long time, and this is the first I've heard of that. Did anyone else need to pick one up before surgery?

Supposedly it functions like a weight belt, so when you perform your cough test after surgery, it doesn't hurt.

I just used a small pillow held against my tummy.

I used my horseshoe-shaped travel pillow. I think anything firm held against your stomach would help. I don't think there's any sense in buying something you will never use again.

Not unless you're planning on getting pregnant Doug ;)

I've been planning on switching to buckwheat pillows for a few months now. I just haven't yet. I bought a small travel/childs sized buckwheat pillow to use against my stomach AND to "test it out" before committing to buying the bed sized buckwheat pillows. Gotta say I'm a convert.

I recall reading something about using a pillow, or Teddy Bear in my surgeon's notes, but I honestly don't remember doing a "cough test." And I hardly used any pain meds so I don't think I was too loopy to remember. I did use a spirometer to cut my risk of pneumonia and I had a horrible sore throat from the tube, but I don't recall any of my nurses making me do a specific cough test.

So, if you are asking my opinion, I would probably skip buying this item, especially since you have zero chances of ever using it again.

I've just purchased the travel size buckwheat as well! I've been using it for about two weeks and although it seems to be okay for my neck, it's taking some getting used to.... I didn't even think of taking it with me. It's so heavy!!! lol

It does take some getting used to. I think I may end up buying the "duplex" pillows for our bed that are buckwheat hull & millet. I don't know how it'd work out with tummy but I'm gonna see if it works for me. If not, I don't have a problem keeping it for laying on lol and using something else.
