Sip, Burp! Sip, Burp! When will it end?

Recommended Posts

I am a week post-op and on liquids (clear and thin). A sip of water---wait a few seconds---burp! The same thing happens with boullion, Protein Shakes, gatorade, etc. I had a hernia before surgery that made me burp about 20 times a day unrelated to eating but it was repaired. I cannot go out in polite company and burp after every sip. These are not soft, ladylike "urps," these are like a linebacker-eating-corndogs-and-drinking-beer belches. When will they go away?

Foxbins, I know your pain, I was sleveed on Monday and though it would have gotten better by now. I am really worried about going back to work next week.

Hey there, I am only a week ahead of you in being sleeved and I am still letting out some good burps when I eat or drink! I do hope this passes soon!

It passes soon, at least it did for me. I think I was about 2 weeks out when the cycle of 1 sip = 2 burps finally subsided. Hang in there!

Yep, it gets BETTER but may not entirely subside. You have significantly less capacity now so there is a lot less room for gas now too, while SOME of it might of been reabsorbed before - now it must come out. Eat slowly and try not to swallow air - a tough thing to NOT do. Push your food to the roof of your mouth and try to minimize the amount of space it takes in your mouth and swallow. Don't suck on straws till the gurgle at the bottom either.

I do burp a little and am happy for it! They are just little burps though. I know the Water has gone down when this happens, there is lots of gurgling too... its pretty funny now, but I do hope some day it mostly goes away... I just know that when I drink, there is gurgling and if Im lucky a little burp, I can have another drink. I can drink a little faster than the recommended speed of one oz per 5 minutes, or one cup per hour... its still hard to get all the water in!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
