My friend wants to get the sleeve, but her father is very opposed to it. He won't do any research and has never heard of it. I think he doesn't want to take the time to read long articles or anything like that, but he might be influenced by real stories of why people have chosen the sleeve over the lap-band.

I have tried to explain in my own words, but I'm no good at it and always leave stuff out.

So does anyone care to help by writing in your own words why you chose the sleeve, and if you chose it over the band, why did you make that choice?

Thanks!

Is he open to the idea LAP-BAND but not the Sleeve? Or opposed to both?

ok so, in my own words:

I decided to have weight loss surgery because I have been unhappy every day for over 20 years becase of my weight, if I remain over weight I am at a high risk of many serious and possibly fatal health conditions. I deserve to live, and I deserve to do so happily.

I looked at the lap band, and almost booked it, and then I met a lot of people online who were unhappy, people who couldn't get the fill right, people who had had slippages, and people who had ended up seriously ill because the band had eroded their stomach which almost killed them. I dont want my weight, or it's solution to rule my life.

I read about the sleeve, it is one simple keyhole procedure, when its done, its done, no adjustments, no foreignobjects in your body, you get the op, you heal, you get on with the life you deserve.

I shared a room with two people when I got my surgery both in for band procedures, one was getting it fitted, one was getting a bad band repaired, after they heard about the sleeve, and saw hw much quicker I was up and around than they were BOTH told me they wished they had researched more and gotten a sleeve instead.

I'm loving mine so far!

Hope this helps.

My feelings exactly when comparing the sleeve and the lapband. I'm a retired RN of 30 years so did a lot of homework. Recently, I was complaining to my surgeon that I thought I should have faster weight loss...he laughed and said this is a marathon and not a 50 yard dash and you're lucky you didn't choose a lapband. So many of those people are lucky to lose a lb. a week, have major problems, and many end up having a second piece of surgery to have done what you've done. Thank your lucky stars that you did your homework first. Enough said I guess.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
