DisneyAddict 10 Posted January 20, 2011 I'm thinking I should probably start slow walking on the treadmill a few days after I come home? Does that sound about right? I know I can't do any sort of weights/lifting for 6 weeks per what the dr gave me. How about yoga/pilates as long as it's not strenuous on my tummy? When would yall think I could start doing that? Firefly2 9 Posted January 20, 2011 my doc told me only walking for the first 6 weeks. I asked about pilates and yoga and he told me not until i'm 6 weeks out. Now I know that some people have started working out sooner but I'm gonna play it safe and wait another couple of weeks. Hope this helps - Tiffany
feedyoureye 3,087 Posted January 20, 2011 I just got surgery two days ago and there is NO way I could do yoga or pilates yet... I can barely stand up. I am walking a little bit, and hope I will be able to do more of that soon. Don't rush it, you will see what you are capable of soon enough!
DisneyAddict 10 Posted January 20, 2011 makes sense. I've really no idea what I'm in for painwise lol. Soon enough though.
BlackBerryJuice 349 Posted January 21, 2011 I would stay away from yoga/pilates the first 2-3 months. There's a lot of core work in both, both in terms of flexing your abs and stretching them, which would put unnecessary pressure on the stitches in your abdominals. stcyt 15 Posted January 22, 2011 I have to agree with blackberry juice (nice abs btw)..... I don't do pilates but I am a big yoga fan. My doctor told me I could do yoga at 6 weeks and more strenuous stuff at 10 weeks.... WHAT!!!! Thankfully I had been into yoga before surgery and knew just how strenuous it was... especially for the core. I think my doc was part of a large majority of people who think yoga is not a real exercise. The studio I go to is called "CORE power" and it works my middle like crazy. The bottom line is be careful... dont overdo it. There is plenty of time to develope your exercise regimine.

LOL I aspire to have abs like that I think you nailed it on the head with me... I feel like I should be doing something more than just walking on a treadmill especially for 6-10 weeks. I mean it makes TOTAL sense why that long but... still ya know? Blackberry it looks like you do lifting & such... when did you start that? 6-10 week time span too? BlackBerryJuice 349 Posted January 22, 2011 Blackberry it looks like you do lifting & such... when did you start that? 6-10 week time span too? Hey, thanks! I always lifted weights, so I had the muscle mass before the surgery - it's just been a matter of maintaining it and losing the fat on top since the surgery. I started some light weights maybe 8 weeks out (no ab work), and I went full throttle with heavy weights, weighted ab work, and bootcamp at about 3 months. I've got a book on order that I'm looking forward to.. the new rules of lifting for women. I'm really looking forward to getting into it. I guess... and this goes for everything I've asked about... once you hit about that 6 week mark "You Know" when you can handle what and how much? Would yall say that's about accurate? Just not try to do too much too quickly (obviously). I'm just really anxious to be ABLE to exercise again.. lol I NEVER EVER thought I'd utter those words ever. brittu 42 Posted February 24, 2011 My surgery was with Dr. Aceves and he has a strict nothing but walking policy for 12 weeks. My sleeve surgery was easy, I had no pain and the recovery was quick. I was a serious Pilates girl before my surgery and I followed his instructions. Even then, the month I started exercising I ended up with a large abdominal hernia - caused in part by having a diastasis (separated abdominal muscles) after pregnancy, and in part from all the incisions I'd had from multiple surgeries. I had to have hernia surgery right away. Even though I've had many surgeries (including a c-section) the hernia repair was far harder than I expected. In fact, I can still feel the tug from the mesh and sutures and my surgery was in October. So... while not trying to scare you I would suggest that you take it slow, follow your doctor's advice and work your way up to strength and fitness.
