How do you know how many calories, carbs, etc. to have after surgery? I have been to nutrition classes, but they didnt really tell us that. Are they going to tell me that in the hospital? What really works? I want to lose!!

Some doctors care more about that than others. We got more info at each aftercare meeting. The nut said they didn't want to overwhelm or confuse people when rules are different at different stages.

Such a difficult question to answer. Each surgeon/NUT seems to have a different plan. Some swear they can only lose with x calories or being under x carbs.

You can search on here for various plans by various surgeons and hospitals. I also think eureka is right - you will get more from your plan as time goes on. If not, insist on it - you need a guideline to start with. And REMEMBER, it's just a guideline. You may have to modify for your needs - the one thing I have learned on this journey is that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. This isn't a One Size Fits All Journey.

If you have questions - ask on here. We can all offer up what has worked for us.

For me ... Protein above 60; tried to keep over 75. Carbs - first 6 months, under 75. Then, 75-100.

On maintenance, I'm trying to stay 150 or under for carbs, 60g Protein, and around 1500 calories. My blood pressure is low so I've been adding salt. I'm seeing my weight around 127 - 128 the past two weeks because of "water" from the salt. I'll see how the weight goes for this month & adjust as needed. My "freak out" point is 130. If I hit that, I'll immediately drop back to 1200 calories and decrease carbs again. Make sense?

My surgeon hasn't even mentioned carbs or calories... my guidelines were - 3 meals a day, no more no less - defo no snacking; 60-70g of Protein to be eaten first; eat until full and don't take over 30 mins to eat a meal; drink plenty of water!!!

He said I should eat what I want but focus on protein... but like Mini said, I moderated this to suit my own individual needs There are some days when I have a Protein based snack because either my cals are too low, I am hungry or I need to make up my protein!

Remember this is a great place for asking questions.... I really don't know how I would of kept sane over the last 6mths without this place!!

All of these make sense. They told me to just get the Protein and Water in first. But i think eventually that will have to change. This site is so informative. Thanks all! i need all the help i can get!!:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
