Vitamin D Deficient

Recommended Posts

Well I just got all my labs done last week and the results are in. Everything is perfectly fine but I am Vitamin D deficient. My surgeon won't allow be to have surgery until my Vitamin D is in normal range. Does anyone know why. I just don't understand why vitamin D would affect surgery...

I have previously had low vitamin d levels.

Vitamin D is of utmost importance for your body because its role is to help your body use the Calcium and phosphorus from your food. It also regulates normal cellular differentiation thus preventing cancer and helps insulin secretion. Deficiency of this vitamin is connected to rickets.

I believe it can also cause bone issues...

but its easy to treat. more sunshine ( your body can produce it from getting sun) and taking a supplement.

Certainly seemed to do the trick for me. Good luck!

oh okay thank you for explaining! About how long did it take you to get your levels up? I really need mine up in about 3 weeks or less. I'm not even sure if that's possible. I bought some Vitamin D supplements tonight and I am taking two a day and starting being in the sun tomorrow. Time to get outside! lol

I am not sure why you couldn't get surgery because of that. I was defficent in vit D about 3 yrs ago and they just told me to take a supplement. I was VERY low. But they didn't even check it before surgery, so I have no idea what it is now. I guess I will ask the doc to check it on my next blood drawl. A lot of people are acutally deff. on Vit D.

I would ask the dr. why surgery has to be postponed.... now I am curious!

I researched it a little and was surprised to find out that the great majority of overweight people are deficient in Vitamin D. The fat cells actually absorb the vitamin, preventing the body using it and processing it. My doctor actually gave me a prescription for a once a week pill to take - or said I could take an otc daily dose of vitamin D. I opted for the once a week - which was covered by my prescription plan. My surgery is in 8 days, and they did check my levels again last week, but honestly, I took the pill a few times and never really stuck to taking it every week as recommended. I was really close, though. They told me they like you at 130, and I was at 128. (Probably b/c I hate sunscreen!) So I didn't really feel the urgency of importance. If I was below 100, maybe I'd have been more concerned. But kind of felt like, really? let me sit outside for 10 minutes and take the test again. hahaha! Honestly, though, I'm not really sure of the benefits of it. So previous answer from NoEscape21 was enlightening! Thanks!!

Actually Vit D deficiency is starting to become an epidemic with everyone not just over weight people. Get your calcium citrate and sunshine and even eat fatty fish (like salmon). These should help you bring your levels back up.

I had my vit d tested a few months ago and it was 12. I am on 50,000 IU a day to be retested in 4 months. I never considered it would be a problem at surgery. I guess I should have rechecked before I go to Mexico. I had no idea it could delay the surgery.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
