Hey everybody!

Made it through the surgery, not the best experience of my life, but I lived to tell the tale!

I'm home now and on the liquid diet. I t was so nice to sleep in my own bed and next to my wonderful husband who never left my side in the hospital (except for in the OR).

What pain control did everyone have post-op? I'm very interested to find out, I'm a nurse and was planning to do a paper on VSG and pain control.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I had a pain pump for the first 24 hours, then they changed me to liquid Vicodin (nasty stuff).

Did your pump have Diamorphine in it?

I am an RN as well (new grad). I am not sure what they gave me in the hospital (guess I should have asked). I was so out of it. I got pain meds and anti-nausea meds IV in the hospital. Went home the next day with liquid pain med, HYDROCODONE/APAP 7.5MG/500MG/15ML. They were going to give me Roxicet liquid for home, but they had me try it in the hospital and it made me vomit. I know they were going to give me morphine in the hospital for pain after surgery, but I am allergic. I wish I could remember what I got in the hospital!

Glad you made it thru surgery okay! How are you feeling?

Thanks for your info.

I got paracetamol IV and one injection of Pethedine in 48 hours...no wonder I was in so much pain!

I'm glad I'm home, but feel pretty lousy to be honest. I suppose it just takes time to get used to the feelings from our 'new' stomachs. Finding it hard to get the Protein in. I sound very ungrateful...I'm sure it's just the post-surgery blues and I'll be all good in a few days!

Are you pleased with your results so far?

I can't believe you didn't get more pain meds! I think I got something every 4 hours. It will take a few weeks, but you WILL feel better. I felt pretty bad for the first few weeks. Even after that, it took a while to get use to the new stomach. I had weird dreams that I was eating tons or drinking too fast, then would freak out in the dream because I remembered I had surgery, LOL. But I am a little over 3 months out now and I feel AMAZING!! Believe me, its so worth it!

Don't worry about your Protein. Just stay hydrated for now. I drank mostly G2 (reduced cal. gatoraide) at the begining. I didn't get much protein in until I was on "real" food. And I found a higher Protein Drink (Premier Nutrition-30g of protein). My stomach doesn't like a lot of the Protein shakes, or my taste buds, but I like this one and my stomach agrees. I am about 77 pounds down from surgery, and have lost 90 total. I still have over 100 more to lose, but I am happy with where I am in this short amount of time. I haven't had a stall yet, but this week might be the FIRST that I don't lose, or just lose a pound or 2. But thats okay!

Make sure you are walking too! It will help with the pain and the mood! I am sure you know that, its just hard to get it in, but it does help.

My mood has been all over the place after this surgery. It has helped me to just come hear and read or post.

Hope you feel better soon! You will be glad you did this one day! :)

Thanks for that SarahS.

Knowing I'm not alone is better in itself. I'll take your advice and stick to the hydration for now. I am managing to walk, albeit around the house but we have a great long living area so it's better than sitting on my backside!

Funny you should mention dreams...I dreamt last night that I was eating loads of chocolate...strange thing is I've never been a big chocolate eater!

I wait patiently for the day when I feel this surgery was a good thing.

While I was in the hospital (just overnight) they put pain meds and anti-nausea meds in my IV, but I couldn't tell you what they were. I came home with a bottle of liquid something-or-other... I'd know the name if I heard it! But I never even had to open it, and didn't have any nausea. Yay!

I had surgery 1.11.11, I know that I had a "Pain Ball" injected in the main incision site. It may have been morphine. That was all for the pain meds, except what they may have given me during surgery. I was sent home with Tylenol w/ Codine, (I am allergic to vicodine) but have only taken it not for the pain, but for my aching back! I guess being on the operating table, and not being up and about like I am it caused me some back aches...lol.

All I know is they said it would be a morphine pump. Sorry I can't be more specific. I was sort of out of it.

I'm a nurse as well. It's great to see other nurses on here. Anyway, I had IV Dilaudid while in the hospital, then was switched to Dilaudid pill 2mg every 4 to 6 hours at home, but I only took 2 doses after I came home (I was in the hospital for 4 days). It managed my pain very well. The only reason I get Dilaudid is hydrocodone and oxycodone make me vomit. Also, unable to use morphine immediately post-op due to respiratory depression issues. Hope this helps. My doc generally uses liquid Lortab for home pain mgmt.

I had a pain pump with Morphine, I believe, for the first 24, and then they switched it over to some lesser drug, like maybe Vicodin. My take home prescription was for Percoset... I didn't have a lot of pain, but maybe it was the meds??? Glad you are feeling better.

I had dialaudid and it did help with the pain but made me loopy. I hated it. Would much rather had liquid Tylenol with coedine.

Hi, I had an On Q pump for the first 24 hours it bathes the surgical area with a lidocaine mix. I was given liquid Vicodin which I took the first couple of nights but after that liquid tylenol was just fine. I had surgery on Tuesday went home Wed and was pretty much pain free by Sat.

I had a Morphine pump that I could press when I felt pain. But I kept forgetting to press it. they sent me home with Tylenol 3 in liquid form. Didn't use it much. Didn't have a ton of pain

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
