African American Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Question...what are you using for scars? The large incision looks yucky. I'm only 7 days out so I know I have a long way to go but wondering. Thanks!

I'm using natural organic shae butter per my normal moisturizer and Maderma. I used Merderma in yhe past on a 6" surgery scar on my ankle which is now barely visible without a close up look.

I'm from DE too!! I haven't been sleeved yet, can't wait to have it done!!

Hey Rene. Which part of De are you in? You can private message me rather than put it on here. Do you have a date yet? Which Doc is doing yours. You look familiar, we may have met in one of the nutrition classes in Camden.

Hi All!

I wanted to start a thread for African-American sleevers (no worries I HEART all sleevers from the rainbow). I just thought' date=' no scientific proof, that African-American sleevers may respond to the surgery different than our lovely non-African American sleeved sisters and brothers. I wanted to know if we had the same skin issue, hair problems, and other surgery related issues. Also, how to deal with the culture shock. African-American "soul food" may be something of the past... or not. So I was just looking for a space to voice culture related issues and concens.

PS- I TRULY  ALL SLEEVERS.

Are there any African American sleevers with PCOS in this thread also? I hope to be sleeved in May and I have PCOS. I know its a common fact that African American women with PCOS lose slower than out Caucasian counterparts so I will love to hear about your journey and what I should expect regarding weight loss

Hello! I'm in the DMV and would love to connect with people in my area and also in Atlanta as I am there twice a year. I'm new to this thread but excited. I'm currently going through my insurance requirements to get sleeved. My last appointment with my nutritionist is July 9th and then I find out if I get approved. I'm nervous and excited about this process, but soooo ready to get it done and over with. I think my biggest fear is Hair loss. I've been natural for 2 years and I'm hoping that it helps with the excessive loss. I look forward to conversing and getting to know each of you!

I took off 2 weeks. I am a recruiter and spend most of my day going from one appointment to the next. I was still very sore, tired and it of it when I returned to work. Everybody is different. If You have an office job 2 weeks should be good.

congrats on being approved.

Hey wannabehealthy2, I was sleeved on 1/8/13 and have PCOS. I do believe I'm losing a little slower than others. Since my surgery I've lost about 45-50 lbs but my inches are more. My clothes are falling of faster than the scale moves. So I'm grateful still. The symptoms of PCOS are becoming less and less. My cycles are getting more regular, hair in areas it shouldn't be on a woman is getting less and less, my skin is clearing up. So all around an awesome experience. I try not to measure my success against others for two reasons. 1) They're not me and everyone's different and 2) my weight is dropping more consistently than ever before. Plus I'm hoping with my weight dropping a little slower I won't have as many issues with my skin ;-). Hoping at least! But good luck lady and hopefully all goes well for you.

Thanks everyone! I only wanted to take a week but work has been crazy. So I will play it by ear. Congrats to everyone who has had their surgeries and patience to those yet in the waiting game.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
