edwood 19 Posted January 15, 2011 Why am I investing 17 thousand dollars and risking complications with my health and am willing to endure the physical and mental pain? Because I NEED to lose 100lbs But do I really need surgery to do that? My dad says no. He says "you can do it." But I can't! Can't? or am I not willing to? I always like what Colin Powel said "Overwhelm the problem with solution." I am going to overwhelm the problem with vertical sleeve gastrectomy surgery. But honestly is that a cop out? Maybe all it is is something that pushes me to the point of no return. It will be harder to fall off the wagon with a stomach thats 10% of its original size. And, I'd surgically remove procrastination. No going back. But honestly, if a strange man knocked on my door with a contract that stated if I lose 100 lbs in 1 year without WLS, i would get a wire transfer of 100 million dollars into my bank account (tax pre paid). Would I NEED the surgery then? Would you?

Would I NEED the surgery then? Would you? Nope! But as soon as I had that $100 million in the bank, I'd throw a huge party with all my family and friends, eat like a pig, drink like a fish, hit the Chinese buffet the next day, follow it up with Dairy Queen, take a cruise and eat all the wonderful food I could (to get my money's worth, you know), hit up every restaurant I've always wanted to try, always packing it in to maximum capacity... get the idea? Lots of people here -- I'm not one of them -- HAVE lost all their weight, some of them numerous times, losing and gaining the same hundreds of pounds over and over through the years. The sleeve is about REALLY getting it off, in a healthy way, once and for all, taking control of your life, learning to love a healthy lifestyle, and never looking back. All I can tell you is that in the end, even if you're one of the unlucky ones with complications, you won't regret it. 1 renniemommie reacted to this
chilo1 62 Posted January 15, 2011 I still would need surgery,I was offered loads of things if I lost weight, put even more stress on me. BTW you will be risking complications with your health if you DON'T have this surgery! I suppose you're a guy??
AutumnLily 77 Posted January 15, 2011 It is possible to lose the weight on your own! Everyone here has done it many a time. The problem lies in maintenence to keep the weight off. Trying to lose weight and being constantly hungry ( I have been there) gets to you and eventually you start to fall into your old eating habits (for me it is very large portions of food). The weight creeps back and I always end up adding more weight on. I need a tool that will help me curb the hunger and keep me from eating to such excess. I have the will power to eat only health food and to exercise. Its the control that I need and the sleeve is what will help me with my control. It is not about can't do it VS not willing to do it. It is about that hunger monster and the stretched out stomach constantly begging me for more food all the time. After awhile the monster and hunger win. With the sleeve I will at least have a fighting chance against them. So Yes I need the surgery! Everyone has to make the decision that is right for them. And if you are able to do it without WLS and keep it off I would say "Go for it!". Best of luck for whatever you decide.
PamelaAM 16 Posted January 15, 2011 Simple answer. . .I am 57 yrs old and have lost and gained the same 100 lbs over and over and over again since I was 16 years old. Don't wake up and be MY age and STILL be 100 lbs overweight. Do it now - the sleeve is an AMAZING tool! I am already down 52 lbs in 3 months and I know it won't come back this time! Billy363627 15 Posted January 15, 2011 We as people always take the easy way out.. If our hands are not forced we are creatures of habit. You would get you 100 mill and by the next year you would weigh a time and a half more than you weigh now. This surgery is to force you to control what eat so that it is not soo easy to shove stuff that is not good for you in. Trust me if you eat the things that you souldn't then yes your weight loss will be a lot less. It eliminates your hunger so much it makes you think what you are putting in your mouth and you make a lot better choices on what you eat..
AutumnLily 77 Posted January 15, 2011 Well put Lily Thank you Feedyoureye, Somedays I can express what I truly want to say in a logical way. Today was that day
Rootman 1,101 Posted January 15, 2011 My worst problem wasn't the weight it was the addiction to food that I could not kick. I ate WAY too much and could not stop. The sleeve provided the only answer that I could afford that offered a hope to beat this addiction and lose the weight that was killing me. It WAS a hard decision for me too but I knew the benefits far outweighed the risks.
dramagirl28 22 Posted January 17, 2011 I had this EXACT thought process about 3 years ago when my mom was getting a GBP. I went with her to her orientation and by the end of it wondered if I should also have surgery. I had lost weight successfully with Weight Watchers in the past, but gained it back. Ultimately I decided I was too young to "give up" on my willpower, so I went back to WW, joined a gym, and had lost 70lbs in about 6 months. Then the same old same old started happening.... cheating more here and there, choosing to go on dates rather than going to the gym. Now I'm back to the same weight I was at that point, but 3 years older. For me, I CAN lose weight on my own, but I can't keep it off. I have decided that I need help. I need a tool to prevent me from overeating. And I read so many posts from people saying they wish they had their surgery years ago, so I'm not going to wait any longer. If you haven't REALLY tried to lose it on your own, you should definitely give it a shot. There were lots of people in my WW group that were lifetime members and successfully maintaining. But if you're like me and you have tried and you need help... there's technology available! Use it and finally be healthy!
renniemommie 8 Posted January 18, 2011 Dairy Queen and a Buffet to celebrate! That would SO be me!! LOL My Dad says the same thing.. Seriously, maintenance is the issue. We are all fighting some issue or another with the weight. A cop out? Maybe, a little, but is that so bad? if it works, it works!
LilMissDiva Irene 3,282 Posted January 18, 2011 Short Answer: Yes I could lose the weight on my own, then bank those M's. Long Answer: Then I would take those M's and get me a VSG so I can KEEP IT OFF!!
soldierzgirl36 0 Posted January 18, 2011 This will be money well spent. Dont listen to others and they arent living inside your body. This will be a wonderful tool and a blessing to just be able to workout and not be hungry all the time:) Why am I investing 17 thousand dollars and risking complications with my health and am willing to endure the physical and mental pain? Would I NEED the surgery then? Would you? Yep I have to say I would still need the surgery because if I could get that 100 lbs off... I wouldn't weigh what I do right now. I wouldn't have wasted the last 10 years of my life (and my 20s to boot) being obese.
