Has anyone experienced becoming imtolerant of certain foods after VSG?

Recommended Posts

I've been to two WLS Support Group Meetings and heard numerous times about people not being able to tolerate items that were fine before the surgery...like artificial sweetener or milk. Is that common with VSGs? Most people at the support meeting were not VSG.

Carbonation. I can drink a little but it doesn't sit well so I avoid it. But other then that there doesn't seem to be anything I can't eat.

You can become lactose intolerant after surgery. Luckily, this did not happen to me, but I know someone personally who it did happen to. The enzyme that you need to digest lactose sugar is in your stomach, so I am assuming that when they remove a large portion of your stomach, some of that enzyme is also removed...hence some people can no longer digest milk properly. I am not sure what the percentage is of people that it happens to though.

Supersweet I think that is whats going on with me. My Protein Shakes just don't sit well in my tummy if they have milk in them. But thats the only thing so far that I'm having problems with but then again I'm not on full foods yet

There are a ton of things that I just don't "like" anymore. I was a diet coke addict before surgery, but as soon as my surgeon told me I would need to give it up, I went cold turkey (Sept 21). During the time before surgery and giving up the diet coke I inhaled crystal light like nobody's business. Since surgery I can't stand it...at all. I've taken a tiny sip of diet coke once or twice since surgery and am relieved that it doesn't taste good to me anymore. I know some people say that diet sodas are fine after six months, but I'm better off without it, and I know that if I like it...I'll drink it.

Cold drinks...especially with ice in them, make my belly ache.

Pretty much the only thing I drink these days is room temp Water, and hot Decaf green tea with stevia.

I have to be careful with things like edamame and chickpeas because if I don't eat them really, really slowly they stick, and that's not fun at all.

All Protein supplements spark massive diarrhea within 20 minutes of eating them. That made it difficult in the beginning, but now that I'm able to eat more, I just get my Protein from shrimp, chicken, greek yogurt, cheese, tuna, crab legs, tilapia, etc. It took me 9 weeks to get here, but now I get about 70 grams of protein a day from real food.

I'm going to add in some salad-y types of veggies this week and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm dying for some salad...even if it's just 1/4 of a cup!

My husband is lactose intolerant, and he takes Lactaid pills when he eats anything with dairy. They really seem to help. You can also buy drops to add to milk or lactose free milk, but it does taste a little sweeter than regular milk. You could also try soy milk, or rice milk. I would try some different things and see how you feel.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
