On the Path to VSG...Hopefully Best Decision

Recommended Posts

I am a life long dieter...read a journal I wrote when I was 8 and even then I was talking to myself about losing weight. I've been a pauing member/meeting attender with WW for numerous years and although I love the program, I still struggle with Portion Control, emotional eating and general grazing. I see a therapist to help with the emotional aspects...and that has helped. I do WW and that has helped...especially with improving overall healthy food selections. But......highest weight of 273 led me to a WLS Seminar in December 2010. I am lucky to live near a Bariatric Center of Excellence. Went for my first consultation a week later. My insurance covers the VSG and I passed the "exceeds a BMI of 40" test with flying colors.

Now I am faithfully following the WW program while I navigate the insurance approval. My therapist wrote my psych evaluation and I attended a WLS Support Group Meeting. I plan to continue to attend those as continue towards surgery. I have even purchased all the stuff for the two week preop diet (got to shrink that liver!). I've lost almost 7 pounds since the seminar.

I'm looking forward to having the surgery and moving on. I want to decrease the grehlins, enfirce portion control, continue WW, and WLS support group meetings. I'm hoping this site will be a great source for ongoing support and advice as well.

Bring on the VSG!

Glad you made the decision! I too have just recently joined and have felt the support way beyond what I was expectingbiggrin.gif I also have tried WW in the past and it worked for awhile, the idea on a whole is great, just didn't quite meet my needs. I am glad to hear that you have done your research and have chosen VSG, pretty much any question you have about VSG can be answered on this sitelaugh.gif

Welcome. I tried WW several times and the last time at work I only lost 7 lbs and I really tried. I finally decided on WLS and the doctor recommended the sleeve. I am so happy since I have had it done. I weighed 232 at my first doctor appointment and today I weigh 191 and was sleeved on Dec 1st. I never would have been able to do this, if I did not have surgery. I am loving how I feel and can't wait as I keep losing weight to reach goal. This place has been a wealth of information for me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
