Returning to Work on Thursday

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

So I return to my job as a Nursing Assistant on a busy Med/Surg floor on Thursday. Today is my 3 week surgiversary. Im happy to be going back, but nervous at the same time. I run out of energy so quick. For example, yesturday I cleaned the kitchen for maybe 1/2 hour, ran some errands, and when I came home I ended up taking a three hour nap. Then after cooking dinner, I was so tired I went to bed at 7.

So far I have been getting better on my fluids, getting 45-60 oz a day. This is quite an improvement for me. As far as protien, I need to improve. Yesturday I only managed about 35 grams. Could this be the culprit?

My guess is the Protein haas little to do with it. I'll bet it's just the shock to your system and the change from your daily routine.

I had little vacation left so I was sleeved on Monday and went back to work Friday! YIKES! I thought the day would never end.

Stick with it girl, don't forget to ask for help at work. Unless your work site is really bad most folks would be glad to lend a hand for some things.

Thanks. I plan on asking for help with lifting and taking things slow, instead of my normal super charge speed.

Sounds like a good plan ... just remember, you had major surgery and your body is still recovering. Don't forget to keep liquids with you so you can stay hydrated.

Michelle, best wishes to you returning to work. I am 5 days post op and return to work on 1/18 ... as of today I feel there is no way I could manage a full 8 hour day at work, and I have a sedentary desk job. Fortunately, I have an understanding boss and likely will be able work half days and/or work at home a few days until I am really back up to speed. Hopefully family and friends can help you out with things at home, running errands, etc. so when you get home from work you can just rest! Don't hesitate to ask for support if you need it! smile.gif

On days I work, I'm a housekeeper, I drink 2% milk while I'm working. It really keeps me hydrated and gives me energy. Hope you have an easy time of it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
