Just Getting Started

Recommended Posts

I am just starting the process for the sleeve surgery. It has been recommended to me by my Dr. I am around 400 lbs +/-. I have no idea because I don't have a scales that goes that high. So far I am healthy other than I can not walk very much without getting winded or my back hurting. So when I go grocery shopping or whatever I have to lean on a cart to keep my back from hurting. Obviously, I don't shop much especially if it entails a lot of walking. I do not exercise either so I am pretty weak. I have my first seminar and Dr. appt on Jan. 13th. I have the support from everyone in my family with the exception of my husband. So far he is refusing to go to the seminar with me or to even be receptive to the idea of me having the surgery. In 40 years of being very happily married I have never gone against his wishes. I wonder if anyone else has met with this problem and how you handled it? I am not sure I am strong enough to go against him and get the surgery without his support. I had a hysterectomy about 4 1/2 years ago and they almost lost me on the table and I know that is what he is thinking now so I understand his situation. But if I don't do something fast about my weight I could die from a heart attack too. Anyway, if anyone has had this problem please let me know how you handled it.

Sounds like your husband is afraid of losing you. Maybe you could have your doctor call and talk to him about the dangers af NOT losing weight. Is your husband overweight as well? Maybe he is afraid you will try to get him to lose when he isn't ready to. Talk to your doctor about the problem and see if he can help. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
