Another sleep study tomorrow night!! Ugh.

Recommended Posts

Well, I just got a call from my sleep center (I had my sleep study Wed night) and I have obstructive sleep apnea. Not the news I wanted to hear, but just makes my resolve to have VSG that much stronger! I'm scheduled to go in again to sleep with a cpap machine tomorrow night!!! YIKES! I may not be able to make it to church Sunday morning, but DH is taking vacation starting Sunday so I won't have to worry about my girls while I sleep! The ball is really rolling! Anyone that has a cpap machine, do you have any advice for me? Will it be horrible?? Hoping I get some sleep with that machine strapped to my face! ;o)

Let me start by explaining it takes me a long time to get to sleep normally, but I had a hard time getting used to the CPAP machine. The noise and the airflow kept me from settling in to sleep. My father and my brother in law love theirs and would not even try to nap without it. I hope you fall into the love it category!!!!!!

Like the other poster said, it takes getting used to. I still cannot stand mine. Im still exhausted. I use it though every night even if I nap during the day because it does stop me from snoring and if I try to sleep without it I wake up with a sore throat. Just know that there are sooooo many different face masks and you might have to go through quite a few til you find one that works for you.

I have a cpap and swore I'd never use it UNTIL, they had me try it at the clinic and I woke up amazed thinking "Ahhhh so this is what it is like to have sleep!".

There are much better masks available then when I first started using a c-pap. Some were masks that almost covered your whole face. I use a mask now that is a couple of straps and "pillows" that rest in my nostrils. Considering your morbidity rate goes up something like over 30% when apnea, there is no question for me to use it. Hopefully one day after surgery I won't have to.

I encourage you to try it and embrace what good things it will do for you. You might have to try a couple of masks to get the right fit, but ask them for the "For Her" mask.

BTW, my son had to use a full mask (covered nose and mouth) because he could not sleep without his mouth open.

Good news, he lost over 125 lbs on his own and doesn't need it anymore.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
