Heartburn - STILL!!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I am almost four (4) months post-op and I am still having problems with heartburn. Its no longer in my chest but the feeling is in my throat. Its feels like a burn. I'm on heartburn meds and now liquid aloe vera which was recommended.

Is anyone dealing with the same problem? Anyone had this problem? Does it go away? I sleep with three pillows. Some days are better than others.

Thanks. Irene

I've been dealing with alot of heartburn after my surgery. It's mainly in my chest, but does move up to my throat at night.. Did they scope you before surgery to see if there maybe bacteria or anything in your stomach? I was scoped the day before my surgery and the H. Pylori bacteria was found. It causes your stomach to produce way more stomach acid "because it's trying to rid the bacteria" I never delt with heartburn other then when I was pregnant, so it's been really difficult. My doctors office told me that the H. Pylori will cause heartburn to be worse then it would be without the bacteria and with out treatment can cause worse problems over time "Stomach Ulcers/Cancer" If you didn't get scoped find out why and see if there's something they can do to see what's causing the excess acid. Especially if the meds they gave you aren't working.. Best of Luck!!

Make sure you're taking a true PPI on an empty stomach, if that particular PPI is NOT working, have them switch it. If you're buy OTC, buy a different one.

You need to find out what's going on, Barrett's esophagus is nothing to play with and it can lead to esophageal cancer.

I'm not trying to sound harsh, but be informed, and make sure you get on a PPI with the proper dosage.

Nexium, Protonix, Prilosec and Prevacid are all pretty popular. If you're one of those, ask to see if you take a different one. Some people have to try different PPIs to get relief. If you are not on one of those listed (other than the generic form of Prilosec or Protonix), then you aren't on a true PPI. Zantac and Pepcid are h2 blockers and do not work the same to block the acid production.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
