How many of you did a week of liquid diet B4 your surgery??!

Recommended Posts

My Doctor required 2 weeks liquid diet for me pre surgery, for him it's 2 or 3 weeks depending on your BMI - body fat percentage, the higher the body fat the longer the pre-op diet. It's so that the liver loses fat and becomes small enough for them to do the laproscopic procedure around. I found my 2 weeks really challenging. Twice I replaced one of my liquid meals with the equivelant calories in sushi, and twice I replaced one of my liquid meals with fat free artificial crab. Other than that I followed the diet for the two weeks. Post surgery my Dr. said my liver was still on the larger side, but they were able to navigate around it. You may want to ask your Dr. what they will do if your liver is too large, they may either not proceed with the banding, or switch to non-laproscopic surgery, meaning a large incision right down your middle. Keep in mind that the liquid diet is for a reason, it might make a difference in how your surgery goes. Some people have high BMI's go to a Dr. that doesn't require pre-op diet, and they manage just fine. Does that mean the Dr. is able to do as good a job? I have no idea. Try to follow your Dr.s recommendations as best you can, if you fall of the wagon, don't beat yourself up, just get back on the plan, and make sure you're honest with your Dr. so they know what to expect. For instance I've heard some Dr's will do a scan first too see how large the liver is before going in. Best of luck! and congratulations in advance!

XO

Leila

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
