Post op info needed

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve done Dec. 28th 2010. The class I attended informed me to drink 1 oz every 15 mins. I am wondering if they say 1 oz because that is all the stomach can hold or is it the safest way????? I seem to beable to drink about 3oz at a time which leads me to question whether my sleeve is tight enough or not. I paid cash for my surgery and can not put out any more money. I am curious what others have experienced. I have not started any solids or even full liquids yet so I do not know what I will be able to tolerate but any info is appreciated.

They may want you to just take it easy at first. But, if you know you can tolerate it with no issues, than so be it!

Raechelle - congratulations on your surgery last week. Yippee. I too was a self pay for surgery so I can empathize with your concern. Did you have surgery locally or out of country? If you have regular health insurance, it covers (my PPO does) follow up visits even though I paid for surgery myself.

Important to drink liquid and not to gulp down Water getting a lot of air which might cause you to burb or have gas. So I never used a shot glass since old habit die hard. If you go online and google VSG surgery diet you will find a couple of differe nt outlines. Not all surgeons are the same nor do they have the same recommendations. Try to get at least 64oz of fluids (impossible for me the first couple of weeks), take Vitamins (get in liquid form) after week one, and then get protien in - approx 60 grams a day. Stay away from solids or mushies for first two weeks as you are healing.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. No regrets.

I found that I could drip a lot of fluids in one go early out... still can on an empty tummy...

I wasn't worried because even at that stage I could still feel when I was full. If you can tolerate it and it doesn't cause you any problems, go with the flow as such!! Sorry bad pun... but seriously, it is important to be well hydrated, even more so in the first month to 6 weeks! keep up the good work! =]

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
