No appetite for anything...blah

Recommended Posts

I am on the liquid only diet until Monday and the thought of Jello and broth are making me want to gag! I have no problems drinking liquids, so that has been a good thing. Is this normal? I guess I wanted to lose my appetite, but this is rather drastic. I don't really want anything. Anyone have advice on what you did to get through this stage?

Hey Becca:

I haven't been sleeved yet but I would say just go ahead and stick to the liquids you can drink. It isn't likely you are missing a lot of nutrition by skipping the Jello or broth at this stage... that is my guess anyway :)

I have been living vicariously through your posts and am just a few weeks from getting my sleeve. Good luck and I hope everything goes as smoothly for you as possible as you are healing.

Drink anything you can manage, its better than nothing, and you need to stay hydrated. It will pass.... but you've put your body thru hell and back, and the first 2 weeks aren't the best, but its the start of a whole new life for you.

I made sure I had whatever I wanted in the house... so if its liquids you can manage then make sure they are ones you really fancy.... try and get as much Protein in them as possible - I made a squash Soup with some bacon in it, blitzed the whole lot and strained it too.... and it was really tasty.

Good luck

Hiya, I know how you feel !!!

I found that there are a lot of good liquid options for getting your Protein. I don't think you have to do the broth or the Jello if you don't want. I wouldn't worry too much about your appetite, it's probably just your body going through its healing process.

Protein as long as you are getting that in then you will be fine with sticking with liquids you are wanting.. It took me a week or so to get back any want for something other then liquids. I am finally able to eat mushie items but have to be extremely careful with what I choose to eat. If it has to much sugar in it I feel like I'm going to die. If it wasn't really what I wanted but I ate it anyway I feel like I'm going to get sick. Either way it sucks however this past couple of days "1week and 2-4 days out" I have felt like trying more and more. I start on my chopped meats Monday so I figured I would go ahead and test the waters with the juice from Soups with chunks in it. I have started spooning out mushie items from certain dishes I fix for the family, and I have to say it's staying down pretty well. I did however eat to fast last night and felt horrible for a while.

Stay strong and know that the stage you are going through now WILL PASS!! You are only 4 days out when I was 4 days out I felt like crap. Pain in my chest and shoulders from gas, and the discomfort of not wanting anything but Water. It's not easy in the beginning but it gets easier as the week progresses I promise!!

I found some great Soup from a Chinese takeout restaurant. I'm a vegetarian so I got the vegetable soup and just ate the broth but if you like any of those like wonton or egg drop that might help with you fluids. The first night I tried the soup I had about 2 1/2-3 cups and it was the most Fluid I had in a while. It was great! Just remember it is packed with sodium so it's probably not a good idea to have that much in one day. When i have some now I limit it to about 2 cups at the most otherwise I just feel even more thirsty. I'm almost 7 weeks out and still struggle EVERY day to get my liquid in, I only get about 20-30oz. I'm thirsty all the time I just can't drink much no matter how much I sip sip sip.

Like everyone said, keeping up with the fluids is so important during this healing time, more so than anything else, so that is great that you have that tackled. I felt the same way, I could actually care less about eating. That is not to say that I don't enjoy eating, but with the ghrelin gone, I honestly *feel* like I could go all day and eat nothing. I don't of course, but I do not have that constant hunger. For me though, that is such a great feeling. It has given me control over food, which is such an incredible feeling.

My specific plan called for liquids for 10 days, then mushies (there was only 5 things on my list :( ) for 2 full weeks after the 10 days, and then finally I graduated to soft food and finally at 6 weeks post-op moved on to most everything. I was happy that I didn't have hunger because it made the plan much easier to follow.

Oh and I loved Jello pre-surgery and to this day I don't think I can eat it. I had bought some of the pre-packaged single serving size Jello cups (sugar-free) and they all ended up in the trash after sugery. The only way I could tolerate them was to mix them in my blender with my Protein shake. But even then I just wasn't a big fan, and they finally passed their expiration date. lol.

Becca,

I know how hard this stage is. I am on my 3rd week post op. I could not stand broth, but I got the won ton Soup from the Chinese place and said NO MSG! That was such a treat. The containers are huge and you can sip on just the broth for a couple of days. I am on mushie stage and that is easier. I just don't want to take in too many calories. Good luck & hang in there :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
