Why am I so thirsty?

Recommended Posts

Today makes three days of CONSTANT thirst. I wake up like I haven't drank anything in days.

I know how important it is to drink, so I make sure I drink enough.

However if I drink as much as my body makes me think I want, then I have issues getting my food in.

In the past few days I haven't really ate. I've had maybe one "meal" of liquids per day. But, the rest of the time I feel so full.

I've even tried not drinking for 30 minutes before "wanting" to eat to try it. And, I get maybe three bites in before I feel like my belly will explode.

I can't get enough Protein in just yet. It's all like water/Powerade ZERO.

Any ideas?

That seems strange to me. I would call my doctor's office and ask their advice.

I am two weeks post-op today and I can somewhat relate to you, here is what happens I drink drink drink(I can sip much bigger than I could a week ago), I drink coconut Water which has natural electrolytes, I drink crystal light, water, broth, you name it BUT my pee is still not a jet stream and the color not yet to my liking. It is not brown but dark dark yellow. I wake up with a dry mouth only relieved by...MORE WATER etc. I have also been exercising and sweating so therefore I assume I need to up the water intake even more. I do have to be careful that all I am feeding myself is water though....there is only so much room for food now. Also sorry to mention this but it is important, check you BM because depending on "it" you also get a clue on whether you need more fluids etc.

I am 1 week 1 day post op and I am still dealing with the same issue. I have stopped drinking and watch my clock for 30 minutes to pass before I even attempt anything, and I still feel like I am going to burst from being so full. I start back on my solids Monday and I don't know how I am going to handle getting my meat down if I can't manage to get much liquid down. I've caught myself plenty of times trying to take care of my thirst. I broke down crying the other night because I am sooooo thirsty but can't take care of the problem. I'm not dehydrated and I am doing good holding things down. I am just thirsty. Now I'm starting to feel hungry like I haven't eaten in ages, and as if I can eat a huge steak. From everyone I've talked to it gets better and our stomachs will go back to normal it just takes time. Best of Luck!!

Hope you figure it all out and feel better soon! I haven't had trouble with drinking yet. I do find that I can drink hot tea the easiest, so maybe you could try and see if it helps. Hugs!!!

I know that there is a flavorless Protein powder available at GNC and online...how about adding some of that to your Water? You can drink and get some Protein in too?

I havent tried it yet but just a thought :)

It makes perfect sense that you would be thirsty. A lot of Water and fluids actually used to come from the foods we used to eat. Well, now you're not eating hardly anything. You have to get all of your fluids from your Water or whatever you are drinking.

Take it one day at a time. It does get easier every day. I used to be constantly thirsty too in my first few weeks out from surgery. I drink tons of water now, and I can now eat as well. I'm no longer slightly dehydrated and my thirsty mouth no longer bothers me. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
