1 dy post op and feeling hungry - normal??

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I was sleeved yesterday @ Scripps Mercy in San Diego, and everything had been going well. My only concern is that I am starting to get what Im thinking are hunger pains. My stomach is making noises and I feel...hungry. I brought this up to the nurse and she said it was unusual but it might be that the signals from my stomach to my brain are all confused right now. Also I read on another post that increased stomach acid leads to hunger, so maybe a PPI would help? I am taking on and am due for my next dose in an hour or so, so I will see if that makes me feel better. Another thing I noticed is that I started feeling this way right after a half hour of stressful and annoying phone calls to DMV, AAA, and the USPS regarding my car registration and misplaced mail. So I'm wondering if this could be an emotional reaction?? Has anyone else experienced this?

That hunger hormone is still floating around in your system so it's not uncommon to feel hunger post-op. Not every single sleeve patient loses their hunger completely. Acid can cause false hunger, and your stomach is going to feel weird for a couple of weeks as it heals.

I would stick to taking your PPI as directed, and keep fluids going. If you don't get relief with your current PPI, or start having true reflux, discuss it immediately with your surgeon. Some need to double dose the PPI or try a different formulation depending on what you are prescribed.

Thanks Tiffy! I think that I do need to increase the liquids, I only had about 6-7 oz yesterday and the nurse actually woke me up at 4 am while taking my vitals and told me to have more. Im going to work on increasing them today :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
