Exercising

Recommended Posts

Ok so I had my sleeve 12/6/10 and I have lost 25 pounds since November 29th. I am able to work out at 4 weeks post op and I have been looking into gyms. I have read through other topics on here that cardio is going to be the best thing to do to help with the weight loss. I have never been one to exercise and I have no idea what to do. Do I join a gym? What equipment do I use?

I have also looked into my local recreation center and they offer a Zumba class 2 nights a week for 1 hour. Can I do that when the new class starts Jan. 3rd or should I wait a little longer? I don't know how strenous Zumba is, I just hear how much fun and what a great workout it is.

I want to exercise and I want to lose weight. I have never been so motivated but I am just not sure what direction to go. I do have the Wii Fit Plus but I don't know if that would be enough. I can't do the Yoga stuff on there, LOL. It is way too much for me.

Can anyone help steer me in the right direction?

Zumba will kick your hiney. It's fast paced, high impact movement with lots of moving. It's great cardio. I did love it, but hated the instructor. Zumba will help with endurance and stamina as well. Don't try to kick ass and take names at first, ease into so you do not hurt yourself or burn yourself out.

Do you have a local YMCA? Usually they will do an assessment with you, take measurements, and then teach you to use the machines and weights. That's what I did when I joined the Y, and it rocked. They set me up on a weight lifting program that isolated certain areas of the body on different days.

Cardio is great for weight loss, and building muscle mass really helps keep you tone, and losing inches. Remember a pound is a pound so when you start working out do not freak out over the numbers on the scale. Take your measurements at your calf, upper thigh, waist, hips, bust, neck, bicep. When the scale doesn't move, remeasure because fat is lumpy, bumpy takes up lots of space in our body, while muscle is lean, and takes up less space, so you'll be gaining muscle mass, but losing the bulky fat.

There is not a YMCA near me. I thought of joining the gym and maybe starting off with a personal trainer but I don't know if that is necessary plus I have to be easy on the pocketbook.

I don't click with most personal trainers. They seem judgy about weight loss surgery, and don't think I'm serious about working out because you know I took the easy way out to lose weight. At least that's been my experience.

You can check out youtube.com for how to use the machines, if it's a good gym, they'll have floor associates that can help you get familiar with the machines, and the weights without charging you extra. Snap Fitness is like that around here.

Hey Holly,

I started to walk a lot at your stage, I did use the wii fit and used the freestyle jogging to walk and jog - lightly - then at 6 weeks post op I raised the bar a little... started jogging on the wii more, used an execise bike etc. Around 8-10 weeks I started going to the gym, we have a little one in work, and I used all the machines that I felt comfortable doing, as my weight decreased, I upped my workout and varied my routine. I also went to Zumba at around 10-12 weeks. It is great, real fun, but it is really fast paced and high impact! Like Tiff said a great cardio work out but I wouldn't of been able to do it at an earlier stage.

Good luck with your decision, let us know how you get on...

I am aiming to get more exercise back into my routine...!

Thank you coops. I think I may need to build up some before attempting Zumba so I may just put it off a month. :)

No probs.... you'll know when you are ready to go forwards with exercises and different exercises! I have to be honest, my weight has always ruled what I could or couldn't do so it is sweet relief to be able to move a little faster and a little nimbler... the most important thing for me though is enjoyment! If I don't enjoy myself, I get bored and then I stop!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
