Do sugars make anyone else's stomach feel "weird"

Recommended Posts

I'm going to try to describe how it feels... it feels like there is some pressure going on in there. Like, whatever I'm eating is instantly changed into air compression and it pushes against the sides of my stomach. Then my stomach will feel semi nauseated. Not really bad at all, not even enough to make me not take another bite - but it definitely is telling me "not too much there girlie!!"

After a few bites I have to stop because with each bite it multiplies. It gets gurgley and upset...

I'm just curious if this happens to anyone else?

Here are some foods that do this to me (or anything made with them or from them):

chocolate or any kind of candy

Potatoes

Corn

Most fruits (except banana)

Bread (or any variation - ie pretzels)

Crackers

I am about 3.5 months out of surgery. Does this go away eventually (assuming there are others who feel this way) ??? Is something wrong with me?

My stomach has pretty much done this from the first time I've been able to eat this stuff. I still remember having some potato Soup during my full liquid stage. It made me so nauseated, I felt just awful!!! I really don't eat potatoes now, ever! It does this to me more than anything else, and several times so I just don't eat it anymore.

It gets better. But, I have something similar happen when I eat buttercream frosting like on cupcakes. I can eat half of a cupcake with frosting, and if I eat the other half, I get gas.

For the white carbs such as potatoes or Pasta, I get gas too, and it's not dainty little toots. It's rattle the window gas ha ha ha. Sorry for the overshare, but it's true. And, it only happens if I eat a lot of these foods. Which is rare, but sometimes I splurge.

Potato Soup did the same exact thing to me during my full liquid stage, and today if I eat a bunch of fatty food like heavy hollandaise sauces, or rich lobster sauce, KATY BAR THE DOORS because this tiny hiney is making it's presence known.

For me, it's the high fat content, and I did not have these issues when I had my gallbladder. Since having it out, I get carby gas, I get sleepy after carbs, I get icky feeling with high milk fat, buttery foods like mac-n-cheese, or cheesy casseroles or enchiladas.

I'm not a fruit eater other than melons, and strawberries occasionally, and haven't had any issues with fruits. Corn doesn't bother me, nor does cornbread. Breads don't bother me either, but I don't eat a lot of "white" breads. At home, if I have a grilled cheese, it's on wheat. chips like funyuns, or those kettle cooked jalapeno chips (my 2 favorites) do not have any negative effects on me.

I'm not sure if it's the sugar content, or the high fat since, the only time it really happens is when it's high fat typically milk fat, like icing/frosting, or cheese.

Thank you so much Tiffy! I feel a little better, but thinking that only you responded.. wow - I think we are in the minority here.

I guess it's not such a bad thing. It keeps me from eating a lot of the things that kept me fat for so long - ESPECIALLY DORITOS!! I really can't stomach them anymore than a handful really. After that I'm left feeling pretty yucky.

To be honest, and supposing this is normal, I hope it doesn't go away. I am still going to ask Dr. A about it when I see him next week too. I'm looking forward to my check up and hopefully everything is going well in there...

Thanks again lady!!!

Daisy gets it too with ice cream. She used to get it heavy milk fat, and sugary/fatty stuff, had her GB out, and it seems she doesn't have any ill effects from anything other than ice cream.

I know over on OH there are a few other maintainers that have similar experiences.

For me, I can tell my body builds up a tolerance for the junk. Like now since I've been "oinking" out on junk and candy since OOOOOOOOOhhhh Halloween LOL, I have more tolerance for the bad stuff. Once I go on a purging episode, and get it out of my system, I'll have to build my tolerance back up for it.

I don't know if that makes sense, but essentially, if I go 2-4 weeks without the junk, my body gets pretty pissy if I throw a cupcake in there, and my body rebels. That's the one saving grace I have right now is knowing that if I detox my body, I'll not want the junk.

Funyuns are the devil incarnate for me, and I can eat a lot of them. Doritos have lost their luster for me too, but the damn funyuns are still my weakness. I try to eat some beef Jerky before chowing on Funyuns, and that seems to keep me from eating the entire bag of funyuns.

Sorry for the ramble.

I ate sugars for the first time since surgery for Xmas and let me tell you, I did not feel good -- my tummy rumbled and I felt very loopy. NEVER again. Now, bread doesn't bother me (just expands to the point of uncomfortable) and rice same thing. But out and out sugar, oh no, never, ever again.

I too get a lot of gas with milk products (I was lactose intolerant before, so . .) -- like Tiff, I let my presence be known!

So I'm with ya!

Whew!! I was starting to worry just a little bit... LOL :) That's just me though, I worry about everything!!

Anyway, regarding the milk - yes! I'm scared to even try ice cream. I haven't had any since surgery and ever since I had the worst night of my life when I had some milk over a month ago now - I won't go near the stuff. I did buy some Lactaid milk and it was terrible. Way too thick (even being 1%) and tried to even add a little Water. It was still awful. I wonder if I added some splenda that might help. It's worth a try though because it's about 5 buck a half gallon! I have to at least try...

It made my stomach bubble up a little bit but no other negative side effects other than that. I really want it to work though because it's so nutritious and fair amount of Protein. It's really good since I need more calories due to my workouts. I'm hoping my body is not fighting me with the low calories. If I don't lose a fair amount this week, I'm going to have to find a way to bump up the calorie intake.

...and yes, ladies - the gas is something else!! lmao!!

Wow, this is how I've been feeling since Christmas. I am 8 weeks out and had a few Cookies with frosting Christmas day and my stomach has been feeling weird since. I even tried Ginger Ale flat but it seemed to make me feel worse, I just feel so bloated. I guess it will make me think twice before I try to eat something to sugary.

Feel better LilMissDiva

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
