Woke up w/ sore throat and surgery is tomorrow

Recommended Posts

I am totally freaking out at the moment. This morning I woke up with a sore throat and a little sinus headache. No other symptoms and no fever! My surgery is scheduled for tomorrow and I am desperate to go thru with this.

Anyone have any experience with such a problem just prior to surgery. I could really use some advice on this.

Can't you take anti-inflammatories? spray for the throat? Ibuprofen? Hot milk with a dash of rum and honey?

Gargle with Water and vinaigre?

I was told that NSAIDs (of which ibuprofen is one) were a bad idea pre-surgery as they thin the blood, so I'd check with the doc before having anything like that.

I am home from visiting with my family doctor. He said that I have allergy issues going. No sign of infection just drainage and an irritated throat because of it. Doc says there is no reason I may not have surgery tomorrow! Life is good!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent news! tongue.gif Can you take anti-histamines for it? I use a nasal spray and cetirizine hydrachloride tablets. I kept off the tablets for ~3 days post op, but they're tiny (size of a sweetner) so I went back on them once liquids were easy to swallow.

All the best for tomorrow! biggrin.gif

I got a sore throat two days before my surgery, I prayed and prayed I wouldnt get sick and even though it hurt a little the day of surgery I was absolutely fine. I think it was also allergy related but I know how you felt I was so afraid that they would call off the surgery after all that I had done to prepare for it. So glad you are well and pray you have a speedy recovery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
