HOW BAD DOES IT REALLY HURT after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to read and research everything I can before my surgery this thursday morning. I have been looking at people talk about there journey on you tube. So I just wondering how bad does it really hurt? I have had four children.( 2 with no drugs) Is it worse than child birth????????

I've not had kids, but I can't imagine it being as bad (esp kids without drugs). I found the plication painful, but the painkillers dealt with the pain pretty well. It definitely is way less painful than when I had a pin inserted in my tibia! wink.gif

It's completely different than childbirth, but still way less on the pain scale. My abs were very sore for 3-4 days, and I had brief sharp pain (maybe 5-6/10) when changing positions from lying to sitting for the first few days, but that's it. There were pain meds in my IV at the hospital, but I never had to take anything after I went home on day 2. Everyone's different though, as far as pain tolerance goes.... what feels like a mosquito bite to one person might feel like being impaled to another. If you've had 4 kids though, you should sail right through this. :)

Each person is different,so with that being said. I have had two pregnancies and my pain with childbirth was worse than my WLS.

As a matter of fact after surgery I was feeling soooo good my first thougt was "DID I HAVE THE SURGERY." LOL.

Again for every person who says their surgery wasn't that bad there's gonna be a equal amount of peple who say it was the worst, but I don't think you will find many peeps who regret having the surgery no matter how much pain they were in.

Good luck!!! :D

Thanks for asking this question... I am exactly one week after you.. next Thursday. I can hardly believe how fast time has gone by. I am too am nervous about possible pain. I think its the possible nausea and throwing up that makes me most scared. I am so afraid I will throw up and burst my staples! blink.gif

I know I am in Gods hands and I have faith that he will see me through!

Hi Kimmes, I've not had any nausea or vomiting. Although I do recommend you get a pill crusher for the Nexium anti-nausea tablets as they're really gross tasting and get stuck in your teeth when you chew them up (I'd brush my teeth after I could get everything out). I had to take them for 4 weeks after surgery - yuk! angry.gif

I just had my surgery yesterday. I won't lie, I was in pain the first few hours. They give you pain meds, so it's not like you are in constant pain. Just when the pain meds wear off, you really feel like someone kicked you a hundred times in the stomach. I have found that the more I walk, the better I feel. I feel really good right now and I had a revision from the lapband to the sleeve. Don't worry! You will do great. It really is just those first few hours out of surgery and then once the meds are going strong, you will be fine! MAKE yourself walk no matter how much it hurts to get out of the bed. That is the best healer of all in my opinion!

I broke my left ankle 2 years ago and had to have a plate and pins. It was horrendous pain.

The pain I felt after the sleeve was NOTHING in comparison. I was on the pain pump, but rarely used it on the first day and never used it after that. It took a month before I was feeling better with my ankle, but on the 3rd day after the sleeve, I was up, around, and feeling terrific. I have had no pain whatsoever from this. The only "discomfort" was for the first couple of days I was home, I felt this 'thud' in my stomach when I drank something. It was gone after that, and I have been feeling pretty much normal.

The greatest 'pain' I have had has been mental, in that I have not eaten a solid bite of food since 12 December, between the pre-op liquids and the post-op liquids. Not having my friend in food has been the hardest thing... trying to find things to do instead of eating has been a challenge. But, with each new day, there is new hope :)

This is definitely the question I wanted answered before I was sleeved. My surgery was on Dec. 21st so I am on day 7 today and i feel great! But just yesterday, i was still feeling kinda yucky...day 7 was definitely my sweet spot! The pain was never more than a 2 on a scale from 0-10 at the hospital (good drugs!) and when i got home and i ran out of my precious vicodin , the pain went up to a 5 or 6 at times but only when i overexerted myself (which meant simple things like turning over in bed, getting up from the couch or even washing my own hair). I was also having nausea. I went for my post op appt yesterday...my doctor prescribed me some anti-nausea stuff and that has helped alot (btw, you can ask for a prescription of this before your surgery so you have it ready...it can be in a small pill form...thats what i had). today, i would say my pain is at a .5 when im just sitting and a 1 when i have to move around...i wouldnt even call it pain...maybe just soreness on a couple of the incisions and discomfort because of my constant bubbling stomach. I havent had children so I have nothing to compare this to but i thought it was going to be a million times worse than what it was. But for sure, everyone's experience is different. I was expecting crazy back and shoulder pains from the gas and got none of it. I was expecting soreness and discomfort from the drain tube but the doctor never even left one in. I have to say that my surgeon seemed exceptional in his work and came highly recommended and i think that his expertise also has contributed to a whole lot less pain and side effects. (His name is dr. ganta from austin texas....owner of AIBL if you want to google it). And in the spirit of tmi - i felt so good this morning that me and my hubby had some great sex! oh yeah - day 7 is definitely my sweet spot! Good luck on your sleeve! You'll do great!!

Hi Kimmes,

I dry-heaved a LOT right after surgery as a reaction to the anesthesia, and while it was scary, my surgeon (who is *very* experienced) did not seem very concerned about it. Basically, it scared me a lot more than it scared him. I was promptly put on an anti-nausea med, and I have had no nausea since then. I hope that eases your mind a bit....

I had PMS worse than my surgery. I had no pain, not right after surgery and not in the weeks after. I had no nausea and no vomiting either.

It was a little annoying at times, because you can't drink but I made great friends with the ice chips and was overall happy. I did have a nice room and wonderful staff which definitely makes it much easier.

I did press my pain button but not really because I was in pain but because it helped me sleep at night.

From everything I have heard about child birth, I'd say child birth is a lot worse.

So, it seems like if everything goes right, you have no pain. With complications, you may have some.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
