Banded sushi lovers?!

Recommended Posts

Just got banded a couple of days ago, so I know I'm a -long- way away from trying it out for myself, was under the impression that sticky rice is going to be a big no, but have seen a couple of people post that they eat sushi. Would love to hear if you are a sushi lover if you can or cannot eat it now, and if you can, are there things you find easier than others, or do you use certain strategies to make it work better for you? or?

XO

Leila

I love sushi. Since banding I opt for sashimi - I don't have the cajones to try rice yet.

I waited several months before I tried sushi but have no problems with it. Whenever possible, I do ask for 1/3 of the usual amount of rice for the rolls though.

This is one of my concerns, I love sushi and am hoping I can still eat some when banded. DH can, as long as he is careful to eat slowly and no overdo it.

Love it!

I do avoid the rice and seaweed (unless it's paper seaweed) but I only manage to get about 5 pieces down.

It's a ritual...always warm tea first.

I love sushi and it goes pretty well. My favorite way to have it now is to have the pieces of fished over a bowl of rice (sushi bowl). Then I can eat the fish, and nibble on the rice if I want.

all of a sudden i'm able to eat sushi again, rice, seaweed and all. all i can say is like everyone else. GO SLOW. CHEW. i think the bad experience i had before was because i was doing the half chewing i used to do pre band. but then again, my restriction has loosened up considerably since i got this last fill.

Me and DH still go out for sushi once every couple of months. I eat half of what I used to be able to, but I can eat it. Hint: think well-lubed with soy sauce, shrimp sauce, etc.

Sashimi is one of the great bandster foods: it's pure Protein and very soft. It's the rest of the stuff that comes with sushi that's problematic, especially the seaweed. Rice is just filling, if you eat too much you won't be able to eat anything else. But the seaweed wrap or salad can be very difficult to chew well enough, so proceed with caution! My very worst experience was with a bit of seaweed salad. Never again.

Sashimi girl here. Good stuff. After my last fill I gave up on rice, but have always preferred the flavors one or two at a time anyhoo.

I have a little trouble with sushi or sashimi. It's not the rice, but the fish. It's very tender and tends to go down easily, but if the pieces are too big, they WILL come back up (lol). I have the same problem with shrimp and lobster, cooked. I think that I don't chew it enough, and once it gets in the stomach, it's like rubber, and won't disolve.

:hungry: I love sushi and haven't had any problems. I haven't tried oysters on the half shell yet. Anyone try those? Since I don't typically chew the oysters first, I'm thinking that they will get stuck. That could be a really bad PB!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
