No need for Reconstructive Surgeries

Recommended Posts

Helllo!!!!!!

I haven't received my surgery date yet, but I just have a question. Is there anyone that was 300 lbs or more pre surgery that didn't need cosmetic surgery post surgery? I am wondering because that was really one of the main reasons it took me so long to go through this process because I didn't want to loose all the weight then have to have a lot of reconstructive surgery done because of it.

I have seen folks that have lost a lot of weight and honestly didn't seem to need any at all. There there are those that really could have used it. In the end...when they were all dressed they looked great. I suppose like everyone says it depends on genetics...length of obesity...etc. I have in the past lost appx 70 lb and although I still needed to lose about 30 lbs...I don't think that I would have even considered plastics.

I will say that I have horrible bat wings...and have for years. Hopefully, they will shrink to an acceptable level after surgery with some exercise. I know that loose skin is loose skin and amount of exercise is going to help...but at least there will be some muscle in there to take up some space!

Good luck.

I'm 5 months out and I know that I'll definetely need a dermolipectomyas the skin of my tummy is very saggy and wrinkled. As for the rest My arms and legs aren't as bad as I was expecting. But as myturn just said it depends on genetics and a lot of other things like your age. Don't let this put you off surgery though, I don't really mind about my tummy that much but I will eventually get a Tummy Tuck because I'll feel more comfortable and it's been something that I always said I'd get done if/when I lost all my excess weight :P

It definitely all comes down to genetics, length of time of obesity, age, etc etc... maybe even just some kind of good luck.

I would surely not put off having WLS in fear of having loose skin. The longer you wait the older you get and the longer your skin stays stretched out - it only worsens the loose skin after the fact.

There is no law saying you have to get PS done, even if its semi bad... so if it's not so bad then you can just live with it. It can always be covered up. You can't cover up being obese!! Trust me, I tried... B)

I also know that the further out time goes from your weight loss your skin can kind of "snap back" a little bit too. And yes, doing some toning will help your skin by filling out the excess and I believe also helps the skin stick to muscles more. My skin always looks best when I'm making sure I'm toning my muscles.

The nurse at my surgeon's practice was well over 300lbs and had the lap band. She did wait until about 4 years post-op to have PS. She doesn't look like a knockout to me, just "normal". Anyway my point is what she said to all of us at pre-op, "you will never WISH for the fat back because of loose skin, TRUST ME"

I don't know that I'm planning on plastics at any point, because I'm married, I don't NEED to wear a bikini, or impress people with my naked self. lol. My hubby kept asking about it (I think he was worried about the financial aspect of it) but I kept telling him, "I will cross that bridge when I get there" so I haven't ruled it out but I'm certainly not planning on it either. I once lost 80lbs on Medifast rather quickly (in a years time) but didn't need plastics then. Of course that was a good 14 years ago. Not sure what age plus all the yo-yo dieting I've done over the years will do to my skin. :o

I'm a wait and see person too -- I've basically been obese for a good 20 years (granted I've had some slender moments, but they were moments).

I do know that my pregnancies were killers on my stomach -- my son was a 10 1/2 pounder, so my stomach is not the most attractive.

I have been talking to my husband about it and he's open to it, but asking him to think about it is like pulling teeth -- sigh.

So, I'll wait and see -- I've got to lose all my weight first and then they recommend that you wait at least a year to see where the land lays so to speak . . .

Back in my 20's and after I was done having kids, I was an exercise junkie and very focused on every lump, bump and bulge.

I had Lipo on my tummy in 97, I didn't feel like the Dr got out enough fat so I had to go in for a touch up. Fast forward to 2010 and while my gut is not huge, it did get bigger and as a whole I have gained weight, lost weight and gained more weight.

Back in 99' (wow its been a long time) I was very close to my goal weight and my stomach had gone down well, my boobs went down and sagged but I worked out and was pretty toned.

Now as I approach surgery in June, I know I am going to look different but I really don't want to go under again. I've had a few surgeries and plastics just don't appeal to me. I have seen people whose arms are not that bad on youtube, the boobs-I can always get padded push-up bras. If I lose my butt though --hubby is going to have an issue with that so HE will be paying for some enhancement.

I just want to give my body time to contract and fall into place, and maybe I can learn to love my body for a change.

I think for skin health I will most definetely get a Tummy Tuck, if I go under for that AND I have the money i will get the girls fixed at the same time as they are way south and deflated One more time under anestia is enough for me!

I have had 4 csections and a gall bladder removal the old way so there is no way I will ever have a bathing suit body, but that has not been the point of my weight loss. I need to get healthy and I can be healthy with flabby skin!

Even just 4 years ago I lost a ton of weight doing bootcamp/PT and my body was firm-ish (except my arms). This time, I am just so sad at the damage I have done to myself with obesity - I have wrinkly knees, my inner thighs are like crepe paper, my tummy has shrunk considerably but I don't know that the leftover bulges/jelly belly will go anywhere, my elbows are wrinkly and my arms are not good... it's quite devastating really. Of course you can't tell with clothes on.. but I am 35 and never been married, so I'm going to have to get naked at times haha!

I just don't know if I will have enough guts (no pun intended) to do plastics... I don't know if it's worth trading the skin for huge scars?

If you have a good PS, the scars are not as devastating as y'all are making out. But still, it's a very personal decision. I'm still on the fence about it; I'm only about 9 mos. out now, so I have a ways to go before I have to make up my mind!

I'be gained and lost the same 100+ lbs at least 5 times in my life. When I am thin I still have the empty sacks my boobs came in. I also have what I call the reverse fanny pack belly and batwing thighs. Having lost any semblance of a "girlish" figure when I was only very young, I'm not at all ashamed to admit that I'm going to do whatever it takes to look good after my weight loss!!

Full body list, Tummy Tuck, breast augmentation and maybe even a nip tuck on my throat. I WANT to feel good in a bikini for the first time in my life! I WANT to see lust in my husbands eyes! I want to experience what all the quote quote "normal" women do! I want to rock a pair of heels, a low cut shirt and a skinny mini and knock my husbands socks off!!

Call me crazy but if im going to go to the length of cutting my stomach off.....I may as well have the whole package!

It is most definitely a personal choice and I wish everyone the best of luck with whatever they choose!!

"need" is a bit of a subjective term. Loose the weight and if it really bothers you, then do something about it. (you might want to wait a year or two just to make sure the weight stays off).

If I end up looking like a saggy deflated balloon, my husband will still think I'm as beautiful as I've ever been. And even if I am saggy, it may not bother me.

it's all about what you want and whether the loose skin bothers you or not.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
