recovery time for plication surgery and return to work

Recommended Posts

I am new to the site and am very interested in the sleeve plication surgery. I am interested in the recovery time and when you can return to work in an office environment. I would greatly appreciate any info from anyone who has had the surgery.

Hello! I went back to work two weeks out - but had to leave early that day and I needed to take another four days off.. I wasn't ready, but I don't heal as well as others - Never have! So if you are like me, I would say that 2 to 3 weeks is safe. But I have heard of others going back after a week or ten days! I couldn't. Oh, but then again, I have a semi-physical job...

Good luck! GPS was the best thing I ever did - lol, besides having my daughter : )

When I was banded I took off 6 weeks but I have a very active, on-my-feet-all-day career. I am planning on taking 3-4 weeks off when I have the plication if I don't have to have a hernia repair. If I do have a hernia I expect to take 6 weeks off.

I was off for a week and a half and returned doing light duties (ie sitting at my desk mainly and using the PC). I didn't need a hernia repair, although this is very common (2 other patients I spoke to that were operated the same time as me had hernias). I guess it all depends on the person and how physical the job is and how long the commute to get there is.

I was a pretty fast healer and I am a week and a half out and find that my abdomen is still a little sore when sitting up (which is essentially being bent over or L shaped.) Standing and laying down or sitting up REALLY straight almost with my butt out helps stretch out the abdomen and feels better. (I have a computer desk job too.)

I would also add that I had surgery on Friday, left hospital day after surgery, and flew home on Sunday. It was ROUGH without pain meds. I worked from home the week after, emailing from bed. If you have vacation time, giving yourself a week off would really help.

I am usually a very fast healer,,, BUT, I am getting older! (I guess thats much better than the alternative!) I'm 46,, I had surgery 12 hours from my home on a Wednesday. I stayed in the hospital one night, went to a hotel for one night and rode home on Friday. I went back to work on Monday. So, I was back to work in less than a week. I had a tough time the first few days. If I was to do it over, I would have taken one week off of work. I guess we are all different. If you can take a few weeks off, I would do it.

The recovery is quite fast I was even back out curling 3 weeks after my surgery. I didn't think I would even be able to play the whole game, but it actually felt good, helped get some gas out of my stomach and felt better.

Hi, I just joined this site today and I have been searching weight loss options and was pretty set on the vsg until I came across information on plication surgery. It seems far less invasive and safer.

My question is who did your surgery and did you have any complications such as nausea/vommiting or any other major discomforts? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats on your success and new journey to a better you!

Thank you

I had Dr Lopez Corvala @ Angeles Health in Tijuana. I'm 5 weeks out and I haven't experienced any nausea or vomited at all. I wasn't getting much Fluid down at first so stayed in hospital for 3 nights on a drip. By day 4 I was feeling loads better! biggrin.gif

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
