How did you feel right after surgery?

Recommended Posts

A few of my family members are coming to the hospital for my surgery. They want to be supportive, even though I tried to explain it would be best to wait and stop by the second day when I am feeling better. So, how bad is it right after surgery? Will I even remember they are there? I wasn't even sure at what point the hospital staff would allow them in to see me. My husband will be there, and I don't mind if he sees me in the worst possible state, but I am a little concerned about my grandparents seeing me that way. I am having surgery bright and early this Monday at 7:00 a.m. Thanks for the input!

After the surgery I had my dad, mom and husband there... and all I remember is them kissing me good bye. My hub stayed over night though.

I was SO nauseous, in SO much pain.

My friend came the next day, and I was still in and out. She stayed at least an hour with me and ALL I remember is a brief SENTENCE of what her and hubby were talking about. The pain meds made me sleepy!

I didn't have any nausea and very little pain, but I was still glad that my family left shortly after I got to my room, only because it was almost impossible for me to stay awake for more than a few minutes at a time anyway. I wouldn't have wanted visitors after that, I don't think.

Everyone is different, but as for me: I had very little pain and remember every minute of my family's visit as soon as I was in ICU, about 3pm, after a 7:30 am surgery. I have been exceptionally lucky to have had no pain, no nausea, just some nasty gas the first few days.

My surgery was at 7 am....I don't remember going to my room. I took a nap after my first walk and my husband left at 2 pm. After that I started walking the halls almost every hour. I was given a shot for pain every 4 hours but did not need anything additional prescribed. Pain was minimal for me except getting in and out of bed. I did not feel sick at all but they had given me some meds and acid reducers in my IV for that. They had also did an hiatal hernia repair. I was one of the lucky ones who did not experience many post op issues. I was discharged by 10 am the next morning.

I had my mom, stepdad, dad and boyfriend there. I was in recovery for about 4 hours so when I got to see them I was much more alert. Had bad pain until my pain meds kicked in and one bout of nausea when they were all there. But after 30 of being in my room I was awake and remember everything. They all even went with me for my first walk! I loved having people there. Especially my loved ones. I was nervous about the surgery so for me it was comforting that they were there.

I was in terrible pain when I woke out of surgery. I was literally screaming, and the nurses told me to be quiet so that I wouldn't scare the other patients. I was on morphine and kept pushing that button, my hubby said I was out of it. My surgery was early and I finally saw my kids at 5pm and I was a little better (the drugs were really working by then).

It was worth it. I would do it again in a heart beat. I just wish I was mentally prepared before surgery. I never heard it was painful.

You will feel like crap! It is very nice to have someone there for you like your husband. My wife was there for me and didn't leave for my entire 3 day stay.It was hard for her to see me in that condition. Maybe the family can wait until you come home. You will be fine and good luck!!!!

Hi Becca,

After my surgery I remember being out of it. I stayed at a surgery center and they only let my spouse in to see me for a little while after the last patient left because I used to work there. They kept me loaded up on demoral and it seemed like I need to use the bathroom every couple of hours. Getting out of bed was painful but I always had help. I stayed up talking with the nurses most of the night. It was like a slumber party and they took real good care of me.

The next day I couldnt wait to leave. I had to wait for the doctor to clear me and I refused pain meds as it got closer to his arrival so I didnt have to stay 4 extra hours. They gave me a dose of demoral before I left which was about 10:30am. When I got home I went right to bed. Every day things have gotten better and easier. I wish you the best of luck tomorrow! You will do great!

Simi

I was in terrible condition with the nausea after my surgery and was sorry that I had told a girlfriend that she and her boyfriend could join my husband at the hospital. I was moaning so loud because of the awful nausea and I remember her saying "oh, she's a moaner. . ." and I really didn't appreciate the comments. And I was mortified that anyone besides my husband was seeing me like that.

My sister and her husband waited until the 3rd day to come and see me and that was fine. By then my hubby needed a break (he never left my side from Monday through Thursday) so I had them take him out for lunch. He slept in a hard chair for 3 nights - what a trooper.

My surgery was at 7am and I think I didn't get out of recovery until 130pm. It took me forever to wake up and I don't really remember being taken to my room. I heard people talk to me in my room, but it took a while until I could open my eyes. I was in A LOT of pain so they kept giving me pain meds, so I am sure that added to me taking forever to wake up. In recovery they kept asking me to rate my pain and all I could say was "I HURT!!!" Just my mom was there but it wasn't like i could visit with her because I was so out of it. My aunt works at the hospital where I was and she came to see me too, but other than that, no visitors. I wouldn't have wanted any really. When I am in pain I hate noise! I didn't even watch tv. I just slept or listened to others in the hall, LOL. It kinda irritated me when I was half asleep to hear people talking loudly in the hall or close rooms, so I am sure it would have been really irritating if I had visitors that were talking to each other in my room. My aunt came to see me the next day around 1pm but I had just gotten sick and they gave me pains meds and anti-nausea med so I was knocked out. I was allowed to leave that afternoon, late, but my mom picked me up around 8pm.

Good luck tomorrow!!!!

The first night was really rough for me. That CO2 they pump in you during the surgery hurts! I was pretty out of it for 4ish hours post-op, then started walking around as soon as I could because they told me walking around relieves the pain from the CO2.

1st night = hell

2nd night + = a lot easier

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
