Port Leaking.. No success with LB.. considering VSG or GPS

Recommended Posts

I had my AP Large Band placed 01|17|08 at 364lbs after losing 20 pounds on pre-op diet. My first 6 months after placement I was pretty miserable. I experienced several "attacks" that they had difficulty diagnosing. I had numerous tests done: upper GI, fill under fluoroscopy, cat scan, upper endoscopy, ultrasound, and several ER visits due to pain. I switched PCP's in order to get a HIDA scan. Finally determined it WAS my gallbladder and not my lap band. I had a cholecystectomy on 08|12|08 by Dr Monash (love him!) who agreed to take on my aftercare for my lap band.

I had several scares with a possible port leak and scheduled two separate port revisions that were both cancelled last minute after restriction miraculously would stick around.

Through everything I managed to lose an additional 80 pounds with my band. I got down to 284 then plateaued. My personal life got stressful and I mentally checked out on the weight loss and did nothing for a year. I had no restriction. Didn't want to "deal" with the fills and the "leak or no leak" drama. I stuck my head firmly in the sand.

I gained approx 50 pounds back slowly over the last year. I finally got my personal life back on track and pulled my head out of the sand and marched back to Dr Monash for a fill. I have never been more ready to get going.

Unfortunately the leak issue reared it's ugly head. Restriction was fleeting. After a few short bouts of avoidance by me... we finally tested my band and it was determined that I do indeed have a leak. I lost approx 1cc of Fluid in a week. I am positive this leak has been around since the fall of 2008.

I am fed up with the band. I do not want to pay $2,700 for a port revision. I want it OUT. I am self pay and really don't know WHAT to do at this point. Dr M has mentioned a revision to a Sleeve Gastrectomy... which I would do in a heartbeat... if it weren't for the fact that I am SELF PAY and cannot afford $21,000.

I have been researching the VSG... and just discovered Gastric Plication Surgery (GPS). So now I am comparing the two. That is where I am at now.

If anyone can offer advise, support, similar story/situation.... please please send me a msg. Post. Anything. I am really so ready to give up at this point. I would cut the damn band out of my stomach myself if I could. I am sick of chest pain, burping, heartburn, hiccups, etc. I am sick of avoiding lettuce and similar healthy foods because I am afraid of getting stuck.

I'm nearly 4 weeks out from having a plication and I think it's great. I'm amazed that this past week I managed to lose 2.5 lbs even though I've been drinking cough Syrup and having cough sweets like they're going out of fashion!! I've not been able to workout yet as I've been ill with a really bad cough so am pretty happy with my loss so far.

I was also self pay and I had Dr Lopez Corvala at Angeles Health in Tijuana. I paid $8,000. I think GPS is a great surgery thus far... I'd say I feel 'normal' - I just get full very quickly. I was going to for the band but the maintenance/slippage/erosion thing put me off.

Whatever you decide I wish you all the best and look forward to hearing what you decide.

I can only share my experience on the band to sleeve revision. I honestly love the sleeve, and wouldn't change a single thing about my journey.

The sleeve has given me the immediate Portion Control, permanent solution to my overeating. I didn't want to have a 3rd surgery so I chose the sleeve.

I have zero food or medication restrictions, no fills/unfills, never hungry, and I live a very normal life.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to shoot me a message. You can also add me as a friend, and check out my blog. I have tons of research links on the sleeve including some dietary guidelines, and 5 yr results.

When choosing my revision, I kept the mindset of "think twice, cut once". I didn't want to have to worry about another surgery in the future, or one that didn't have proven results that would get me goal. I had a lot of weight to lose, and wanted to lose it without worrying about another revision.

Best wishes in your research !!!

Hi there and welcome!

Your story is so much like mine. I had lost 70 pounds at one point with the band. Then I developed a leak and I was self pay so I was stuck. I couldn't afford to do anything about it so I just lived with a broken band and gained thirty five pounds back. This past September, I started having extreme pain that turned about after a visit to the ER to be broken band tubing and a slip. I am now revising to the sleeve. I totally understand your pain and frustration. It is so hard to pay for the band and then have it fail you. Just know it is NOT your fault. They gave us this picture perfect representation of the band and when it doesn't work or breaks, no one seems to be accountable. Hang in there and I will be happy to let you know more about the sleeve after my surgery. Don't give up!!!

Thanks everyone for the responses. This website is a wealth of information. I have been busy busy reading reading.

Becca: I am concerned I may be dealing with a possible slip or erosion right now. Since I have been going back for fills the past month, I have been having lots of pain and vomiting. In the past few days it has gotten worse. I cannot keep anything down but liquids. I couldn't even keep mushies down. Tonight I vommitted up thick liquid and it caused a nose bleed. :(

I feel a weird pressure/tightness in my throat... and a burning sensation in my stomach.

I plan on calling my Dr first thing tomorrow to discuss my new symptoms. I didn't want to bother him over the holiday... so I have been sticking to broth best I can.

Please get to the nearest hospital that has a BARIATRIC doctor. You could have a full slip. Be safe and take care of yourself.

Sorry I didn't update!! I saw my surgeon on 12/28 and he did a complete unfill of my band. I had an upper GI done on the 31st and am just waiting on results.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is the GPS the same thing as the sleeve with plication?

Hi formerVBG. GPS is plication. With the sleeve they they cut away 80% of your stomach. With the plication they fold it in on itself so no risk of staple line leak. See here for a diagram

I am so sorry! You do need to get to your doctor. Just know that if it is a big slip, they will have operate pretty quickly to take out the band. My slip was small and so I was able to wait until my revision. Let us know what happens and you can contact me anytime if you need anything.

@adorkbl--I am a Houston sleeve surgeon, and I run into your problem often. I have been able to partner with a great hospital and can do a lap-band to sleeve revision for $12,900, if it has not slipped.

If you lap band has slipped then I recommend you have the surgery in two steps: first step to remove the band and let the inflammation go down, then step 2 do sleeve 6 months later.

If it has not slipped, then the revision surgery can be done in one step.

But revision surgery is serious, so please get a lot of information before deciding something.

Best of Luck,

Dr. V

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
