Billy363627 15 Posted December 24, 2010 Wow I know this is a scary topic to talk about.. I have learned a lot in these couple of months that I have been on the board. I have a question though. Has anyone had or currently have a ulcer on their staple line.. For me this is really scary. I asked my doc about 150 question so far and this is the only question I forgot to ask.. If anyone has had a ulcer. What is the treatment for it and how have you been doing since it was discovered? I don't think this is going to change my mind on the surgery but it is something that I would like to put my mind at peace before going in.
Tiffykins 673 Posted December 24, 2010 The risk for ulcers is actually decreased with VSG unless you have a history of ulcers. Increased risks for ulcers is heavy alcohol consumption on a regular basis, and smoking. Those were the 2 things my surgeon brought up. I've read one story of a lady that developed ulcers post-vsg, but she was on steroids(for over 3 months) for another condition and unfortunately, she wasn't eating while taking her steroids as she was directed to do so. The treatment was carafate, pepcid on top of her PPI for reflux and increased digestive enzymes.

I know it's scary. But, believe me when I tell you that staying obese is far scarier. At least that's what I kept telling myself. Plus, the oncologist I had to see pre-sleeve told me I was decreasing my risk of cancer and ulcers by a huge percentage by having VSG. I had to see him because I have a weird idiopathic clotting disorder, and have to special medication given IV before any surgeries. He really put my mind at ease about losing 85% of a major organ. We're here for you, and just know you are doing something absolutely amazing for your future health.
Billy363627 15 Posted December 25, 2010 Very true. I do realize that being overweight is really serious for your health. I don't have any major problems other than joint pain and have a knee blown out already.. They did say it was because of my weight.. I am really scared (not afraid to admit that). I guess what I need to do is close my eyes and take that first step.
