Recommended Posts

I am new and haven't post much but have enjoyed reading some post so far. I am 3 wks post op and I am having the hardest time recovering. I have had constant nausea since day 1. I have a lot of problems getting all my liquids in. Well today I ended back in hospital for dehydration. The last 3 wks have been so bad I can't get past the clear liquid diet. Has anyone else gonna through this?

I'm sorry that you are having a tough time, hopefully the fluids will help you alot. I didn't have any issues but I have read that being dehydrated can cause nausea. It is sooo important to get in fluids. I tried drinking 2 oz every 15 minutes and it seemed to work better that way. If not maybe some meds for nausea. Good Luck!

Did your doc say anything or did they just rehydrate you and send you home? I'm assuming they've ruled out all serious issues, e.g. leaks. I had some issues with nausea right around week 2-3 and both the emerg doc and Dr. Aceves told me it was likely due to acid overproduction and suggested I take my Nexium 2x/daily instead of once a day.

My surgeon said to drink as if you are drinking from a bottle cap the first few days, because too much at a time will make you nauseous. And the hospital nurse also said that if you do get dehydrated you will become nauseous and unable to drink. So hydration is the key, but slow and steady. Hope you feel better soon.

There are a lot of people who do have nausea problems. The problem is compounded when you get dehydrated because being dehydrated does cause nausea.

The key is to sip slowly. They have those little cups that you use when you take cough medicine. Use those cups at first. Take one sip then wait at least 10 min before trying anymore. Your doctor should have also given you medication for nausea.

I'm dealing with that problem too. Feeling dehydrated is awful! I have been dying for a pop aka soda recently and I just found some pop flavored freezer pops at Walmart, it's like dr pepper, 7up, rootbeer and orange.. I've been eating them all day. They're not sugar free but at this point I just needed hydration and this helped a little. Maybe you could try that. The medicine cup sugestion that Oregondaisy said works very well too. Good luck :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
