What PPI are you taking?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I went to fill a Nexium prescription because my doctor wanted me to start taking it before surgery. The insurance would only fill a 30 day supply for $90.00. THAT IS CRAZY! Can anyone tell me what they take and if there is a generic of anything? I already have to pay my $ 3000.00 hospital co-pay tomorrow for my sleeve and I just feel there has to be something more reasonable. I see my doctor tomorrow afternoon and would like some ideas. Thanks everyone!!!

Wow! I am so thankful for the insurance that I have. With the kaiser plan that I have I did not have any co pay for surgery and my meds are 15.00. I would talk to the doc for sure to see if there was anything cheaper. I'm on prilosec.

I am also on Prilosec. I have an HSA program which means I pay the full "allowed" amount until I meet my high deductible. That total is $50/30 day supply. If you are only paying a percentage of the drug, you should be able to get Prilosec a lot cheaper than Nexium.

I'm on Nexium. Have you ever noticed how bad it smells? lol.

I used to work for a group of Gastro docs. They pretty much said they were all the same. We had patients taking two of the OTC products or 1 of the RX. So you can go back and forth. I sometimes have to have a gulp of Mylicon even 4 months out!

I can get over the counter generic omeprazole for cheap... sometimes even on sale. Or I can get 30 days through my med plan for $10 (WHA)

wikipedia says:

Esomeprazole (pronounced /iːsɵˈmɛprəzoʊl/) is a proton pump inhibitor (brand names Sompraz, Zoleri, Nexium, Lucen, Esopral;Axagon in Italy, Nexiam in Belgium and South Africa) developed and marketed by AstraZeneca which is used in the treatment ofdyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease (PUD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD/GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Esomeprazole is the S-enantiomer of omeprazole (marketed as Losec/Prilosec), and AstraZeneca claims improved efficacy of this single enantiomer product over the racemic mixture of omeprazole. However, this greater efficacy has been disputed, with some claiming it offers no benefit from its older form.

Prilosec (omeprazole) is sold OTC and RX Generic form. Protonix is also an inexpensive PPI available by RX only, but the co-pay is my standard generic co-pay of $3.00

Prevacid is sold OTC, and by RX as well. Zegerid is sold as RX in most pharmacies as well OTC.

I take generic Prilosec 20mg RX once daily, first thing in the morning, and wait 1 hour to eat per the label. Most PPI need to be taken on an empty stomach for maximum efficacy.

You can pick up Prilosec (omeprazole), Prevacid, Zegerid all over-the-counter at any local pharmacy (WalMart, Walgreens, CVS even grocery stores will carry them)

There are coupons on coupons.com for Prevacid, and Prilosec every week.

The bottle says: Pantoprazole 40 mg, which appears to be the generic of Protonix. My copay was $17.42, but that is because I have the worst prescription benefits known to mankind.

I take generic omeprazole (Prilosec). I've found works excellent for me. I'm always finding them on sale at Rite Aid, Walgreens or CVS. I got some the other day 42 pills for about 15 bucks plus a 5 dollars off coupon.

I take protonix and have no co-pay. My doc's office told me that some insurance doesn't cover PPI's and Prevacid OTC was a good option.

I take the RX omeprazole 40 mg, They are too big for me to swallow at this time and make me gag. The are BIG capsuls with beeds in them, So I asked my Pharmacist today and she suggested I open them up and put the little balls in a bite of applesauce to get them down. It worked, thank God.

Otherwise I would of had try the OTC Omeprazole 20mg and take 2x/day for pCK OF 42 the Walmart brand was $19.99, My insurance charges $5 for the Omeprazole 40mg which is generic Prilose. Maybe you could tell your pharmasist that you prefer generic.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.
