Gas Pains After Surgery..

Recommended Posts

I had surgery yesterday and have been suffering from gas pains all day.. It's not all over my body though, just in my left shoulder and under my ribs.. Is there anything I can do to help expell the gas faster? The surgery itself has not caused any pain, just the left over gas.

Ask your doctor for a Gas relief prescption. I took for 2-3 day after surgery.

I've taken care of a lot of post laparscopic patients. For different surgeries. The one thing that helps everyone is walking. Even if you do short walks, then rest. It will help. I was sleeved on the 13th of December. I had terrible gas, but walking helped me belch it out. I sounded like a honking goose for a few days, but I feel better now. The other thing Inoticed was that I mixed my Protein Shakes in a small blender. I think that mixed a lot of air into them. So I mix them and then let them sit in the fridge until the bubbles dissapate.

Good luck to you.

I'm 5 weeks post op today so I can say from experience that mostly anything I tried did NOT help with the gas. I had NO pain other than gas after surgery & it lasted for approximately 7 days...it was trapped & no matter what I did I couldn't get rid of it. I tried GasX strips, lying on my left side, walking, walking & more walking, but it just wouldn't leave out! I must say that Tiffykins idea of the heating pad did relieve it somewhat but it was not until the 7th day that I started being able to let some of it out! WHEW! Glad those days are over! :) Hope you get to feeling better very soon!

Well I did start passing some of the gas last night, and I will tell you now it helped me sleep alot better. I took 2 gas-x pills and used a heating pad as well as my fortress of pillows. What's going on now is my poor daughter is having sympathy pains. She heard me getting sick yesterday and has had a tummy aches since. She has also vomited a couple of times. No fever just a sore stomach and vomiting. Poor thing.. I have been doing more and more walking today and it does seem to help until I go to rest and then the pains come back. I remember all of this with my c-section and hysterectomy, but for whatever reason it feels like these gas pains are harder to get rid of. Praying they are gone tomorrow atleast while we Celebrate Christmas..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
