Practice makes perfect?

Recommended Posts

Hello, all! I was 'sleeved' on Monday morning, came home today. In the hospital, I was kept hydrated using IV fluids and had no problem staying fully hydrated. Now that I am home, I am finding it difficult to ingest the quantity of Water necessary to keep (what I assume is adequately) hydrated. I haven't been to the bathroom once since I have been home, and was going twice a day while 'hooked up' in the hospital.

I am finding it difficult to drink. I swallow and it kind of hurts. It isn't a sharp pain. It is more of a thud-like gassy ache. As soon as I burp, I feel better. It has taken 2 hours to drink half a glass of water.

Do I just need to keep 'practicing' or is this just a simple fact of life?

Other than the water thing, I feel fine. I even went out and ran errands after coming home from the hospital (someone else drove, of course :) )

Thanks!

I came home 7 days ago and the first couple of days I did not want to drink anything, I bought lots of coconut Water and kept it by my side taking little sips it actually helped with my pain and discomfort, then after that on to the Crystal Light w/ Protein. Once you start drinking you will want to keep drinking I have a 20oz cup and I fill it up 2x per day(previous to surgery I was barely drinking one) but I sip sip and only stop when I know that in 30-40 minutes it is Breakfast time or some other meal time. I also check my pee to make sure it is not dark and I think that now I am there where I need to be Fluid wise. Protein...that's a whole different scenario. Good luck and message me anytime:)

I am about 10 days post op and I still can't get in all of my fluids. I have the same feeling that you get when drinking, where once I burp I feel better. I think we are drinking too fast, too much or intaking too much air. I'm getting maybe 40oz of Water a day though. As the above poster said, I check my urine color to make sure it isn't dark. I also go to the bathroom less frequently.

I tried a little experiment: I took a sip of Water and then walked a lap around the den. Either I was too distracted to notice the thud or the activity helped the water down. There is still the burp that follows, but at least I was able to get some Fluid with less discomfort. (there is still some discomfort, but it is not as clamorous as before.)

I never thought I would hear myself wish to be gulping cold water... Usually the mere thought of water makes me gag. But, now that I crave it, it hurts to drink. Kind of a funny irony ;) .

I had surgery the same day. I dont many issues with drinking. I just have to make sure I'm sitting up when I take a sip or it makes me feel sick. Sometimes it's too much, and I feel it.

But, yesterday I was SO tired of Water... I used Crystal light to flavor it. And, it tasted so much better. And, I could get it down.

I also added Protein to it.

Goodluck

Congrats on the new sleeve....I found that after being totally addicted to all things cold pre surgery that room temp or slightly hot Water goes down easier post surgery. Also walking helped me drink also ...Three weeks out I can drink 32oz in about 2 hours.

Today is so much better. I have been able to drink almost a whole little bottle of Water in a couple of hours. And no ache! I don't mind how much time it takes, I just want to avoid the thud. Thanks for all the suggestions and encouragement!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
