How much Protein did you really get "in" during the first few weeks?

I am just getting in around 50 and it is HARD. One week and one day out. I feel like I am failing and am going to loose all my hair or muscle.

I have lost 12 pounds since surgery. I am not feeling dehydrated and although I will spend HOURS trying to drink a Protein shake I can drink Water and crystal light a lot faster. I dont mind the flavor protein I have (finally found one I like) it is just that my stomach feels to full or I get sick to my stomach and feel like if I take one more sip I may throw up.

Advice Please.

Give yourself some time and just sip, sip, sip and do the best you can. You still have a lot of swelling and will for awhile. Post op I was on clears for 10 days so I got Isopure and watered it down - that might be an option if thinner drinks go through easier. I drank it so much I couldn't take the taste so I cut it with grape juice that had a strong enough taste to cover the kool-aid jello-ish nature. There are similar drinks at GNC. They have very high Protein counts.

I definitely empathise - I'm 6 months out (and 60 pounds down) and still have tons of trouble with Protein. Mostly because I'm tired of it. My hair started falling out in serious quantities a couple of weeks ago so I'm motivated to kick it up as much as I can. But I also know from having had a lap band that it's temporary. And I think it happens as much from the shock of the surgery and weightloss as it does the lack of protein. I didn't have trouble with protein when I had a band - I could drink a lot more.

Take care!

I am 8 days out. My NUT told me to get 40 grams while I am on my liquid diet which is 3 wks. Once I switch to mushies, I am suppose to get it to 60 grams. I have found that everyone's dr and NUT is different and that all the diet guidelines are different as well. I hope this helps.

Try not to worry so much. I wish i could have taken my own advice those first few weeks. Almost every Protein I tried made me nauseous & I just couldn't get in it.

I was told that in those first few weeks, you really need to focus on hydration. Get in as much Protein as you can, but push the liquids, liquids, liquids.

This will all be a blurred memory soon. I promise.

My doc and NUT wanted me to just worry about Water for the first two weeks and then start in with the Protein and they wanted 40g. Now at 4 weeks I am at 60g which is right where they want me to be and by 6 months they want me at 75g!

In all honesty I did not get anywhere near the 40g to start with! It wasn't until this past week that I really started to focus on my Protein and everyday I have had at least 60g!!

I think you're right on target. I'm 6 days post op and get between 50-55 grams a day so far. I do have to work at it, but it happens. As long as you're getting in the liquids and don't feel dehydrated, I think you're doing a fabulous job! :)

To be honest, the first two weeks I focused on liquids - I did NOT want to end up in the ER with an IV hooked up to me!!! After I got the hang of making sure I could master that....on week three I worked on protein. I gave up those stupid shakes, way too much to drink and they grossed me out. YUCK!!! I never could find one that was "ok" and didn't gag me.

My surgery was at Forest Park Medical Center in Dallas and they send you home with a huge goodie bag full of freebie stuff and one thing was a protein "bullet" from GNC, blue raspberry flavored...I knew it was something they had said was ok to have to get in my protein and although it isn't something I'd order from a restaurant given the chance, it is ONLY 3.5 oz!!! I bought a case of these things. They are 42 grams of protein, I'd open one in the morning and take a few sips straight up and then another few at noon and finish it off later in the day.....between that and the food I was eating, I got in between 60 and 80 grams of protein a day!!

I supplemented with those the first two months! I have NEVER had any hair issues. I also take a 5000 mg Biotin pill daily. I started taking it a couple of months before surgery! My biggest protein foods are 1% cottage cheese, 13 grams in 1/2 cup, 2 eggs, 12 grams in two eggs, I keep a bag of shrimp around and will steam a couple of oz of it for lunch some times. 1/4 cups of tuna salad is 13 grams of protein....and then a couple of oz of meat for dinner along with about an eighth a cup of cottage cheese if possible!!! I was determined NOT to lose my hair!!!! LOL The bullets saved me, I could not choke down a Protein Shake for two months, I was certain I had to find some other way!!!

Good luck!!!

I'm one week out today, saw my doctor yesterday. He was delighted I was getting in my Water, said that at this point, the Protein was nice, but "don't sweat it" at this stage. I'm allowed sugar-free pudding at this point, mix unflavored Protein (Unjury) with it, and don't have any problem.

I think the idea of diluting the Protein drinks might work for you, if you're not having trouble with Water.< /p>

Rock the sleeve!

5000 mcg - I'm sorry!!! I do not have a bad reaction at all. I can't remember if I got this at Wal Mart or Wal Greens. I remember it was a buy one get one free. The first couple of bottles I bought were 1000, then I found this and when I realized I could take a larger does, I got it! If two 1000 tablets bother you though, I don't think you'd want to take the 5000!!! Did you start taking it pre-op?

Recipe is

It is good Hot or Cold

Makes 8 OZ it has 44 grams of protein so 2 a day it has 120 calories .

I made my husband the drill sergeant and every day he came home from work the first thing he said was "How much protein" followed by "How much water". It's silly, but that really made me go for it once it got closer to 5.30pm, LOL

Do you have anyone who can check in with you, who can hold you "accountable"? Should be a nice person you respect but also someone who will go to town on your "low Protein a$$" if you are not doing it right :P

My original plan was to, yes, i bought a bottle about 1 month pre op but after taking it 3 times with the same reaction i gave up.

The first few weeks, I couldn't find any liquid or Protein that I could tolerate other than regular milk. Finally, about a week ago, I discovered Inspire Protein Powder by Bariatric Eating. It's a godsend ... Blends very well with only 4 oz of Water and stays thin so I can get it down. The flavor I use has 30 grams of protein and 1 carb. Truly wish I'd tried this six weeks ago.

I had to switch to Isopure instead of the shakes becuase they were so hard to get down and made me want to hurl after. I still occasionaly try to do a shake, but I have to thin it down to keep it from being so sickeningly sweet. I can drink the Isopure as easily as crystal lite, so it is much better for me. No heavy feeling after.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
