What can you take for a cold?

Recommended Posts

Prior to my VSG, when I got a cold, my doctor would always have me dose up on Vitamin C and Echinacia. Kind of afraid to do that without checking in here to see if anyone has gotten any guidance from their docs about what you can take for a cold. I can't afford to have it get any worse and normally if I don't head it off at the pass it turns into a full fledged "can't get out of bed" cold. It hits me every year in December - UGH! I have too much travel coming up and can't afford to be sick right now.

Any guidance?

I've taken just about every cold medication under the sun, and my best results have been with the Mucinex fast melt crystals for children. When I got hit with a major head cold, Nyquil liquid caps really worked great at night, and the Dayquil worked wonders during the day. I take a bunch of Vit C as it is in my multi, and an additional supplement. I haven't had any issues with any of the cold medications hitting me faster, harder or making me anymore drowsy now than they did pre-op.

I really do like the Mucinex because it's great for drying out the phlegm and sinus stuff during a head cold.

Thanks Tiff! I knew you would know the answer :-) Someone had said that you couldn't take any of that so I was trying to be cautious. I'm 11 weeks out now so I guess I should be fine. Thanks again for always having the answers!

Ya, my Dr said no way on nyquil or dayquil, but I didn't listen. I still took it and Im still living, hee hee. I seriously think my Dr is really really strict seeing he said I could only take tylenol cold and thats been pulled off the shelf.

You betcha chickee. I don't have issues taking huge horse pills so if that's a problem you could always stick with liquid versions. Even Mucinex has a liquid version for the kids and it has an adult dosage on the label as well. I'm a kid deep down inside when it comes to medicine so I like the little meltaways and melty crystals that taste like candy LOL.

I have honestly not had any adverse effects from any of the cough medications, even the Advil sinus/allergy works really great. I take Zyrtec on a regular basis, and while I don't pump up on drugs, at the first sign of a head cold, I'm taking something to head it off at the pass. I am a big wuss when it comes to being "sickly", and I'm uber cranky so my husband appreciates it when I can take drugs.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
