Individual Insurance Plan

Recommended Posts

First, I would make sure the plan you get covers WLS surgery. =)

I had to do a 6 month diet/exercise with my PCP. I was able to cut a month or so off by starting the VERY end of May and finishing the VERY beginning of October. As long as you have 1 visit per calendar month you are ok. I also had to do a variety of other things...psych, nutritionist, heart doc, pulmonologist, weight history (didn't really have one from the dr except 1 yr...the other year I used my gym log which showed me being weighed by a trainer), etc.

Once it was finally all turned in, including some time for some issues at my surgeon's office (fax issues), it was less than a week. I got approval just before Halloween. I was able to take a cancellation spot with the surgeon and had surgery on the 9th Nov.

Good Luck!

Anybody on a individual insurance plan that has gotten approval for the VSG? If so, what insurance company?

Hey Blondie - if you find a couple companies, there's a free comparison website that lets you fill in the specifics and then tells you what it would cost from each company. The site is www.healthinsurancequotes.org - hope that helps you and good luck with the future VSG!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
