What exactly is the purpose of walking post op? And other questions

Recommended Posts

I'm doing my walking, but i guess i don't know what the purpose is??

and...

1. Realistically, how much Fluid are we gonna get in during the first week post-op?

2. Do Protein Shakes count with the 'total fluids' for the day, or does the Water need to be 1.5-2 liters on their own WITHOUT broth, Protein shakes, etc... ?

3. What exactly counts as FULL liquid diet? ? I know yogurt, protein shakes, broths/creamy Soups. Anything else??

ok so I am no pro...I was just sleeved a few days before you but here is what my Nutritionist and Surgeon told me.

We walk to help circulation and avoid blood clots. It also makes the trapped gas from surgery to move and expel so that we do not have gas pains.

I walked all the time in the hospital and I felt great AFTER I got going each time.

My surgeon expected me to get in at least 15 ounces the first two days and then no less than 34 each day...working to increase to 64. I can get about 34 now but I have to work at it even drinking every time I wake up at night. I have found that if I fill a big Water bottle with my required amount then I use those little disposable cups for the bathroom they hold 3 ounces. I refill those and drink out of them (that helps me to only take little sips). I also use those for Protein.

My DR says that any Fluid I take in counts toward the 34 ounces.

I am not sure what full liquids are for your NUT. Mine said it is liquid that is not clear that does not have chunks.

Hope that helps. If you are still in the hospital I think you should ask to see your Nut or one there at the hospital so they can explain it. Also my Nut told me to email her with ANY questions. Is that an option for you?

Good LUCK

Walking helps break down the gas from surgery and also helps prevent blood clots.

I never had problems getting my fluids in. I was lucky and had no pain from drinking.

I have gotten different answers on this one. My nut said to get at least 40 oz of Water or flavored water in. The diluted juice counts also. I do not count my broth because there is so much sodium.

Sf hot chocolate, sf pudding, sf fudge pops, cream of wheat and thin oatmeal are on my plan oh and sf applesauce.

One of the big reasons for walking is to prevent blood clots. They can happen up to several months after surgery, so keep it up!

Sounds like you're doing good!

Ugh! I seriously had brain damage when i went in for my sleeve. I don't recall ANYTHING i'm supposed to do or the reason for it. OF COURSE it's to prevent DVT's...duh! I can't believe It didn't occur to me and I'm a nursing student who takes care of patients POST OP and have then up and walking asap. Seriously, I feel like an idiot! lol

Thanks for all the info! :)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
