Hello all,

I get my sleeve on Monday December 20, 2010. I went to my nursing and dietician appointment this past Wednesday and was told I will have to give myself two shots of blood thinner everyday for one week after surgery:o . I was stunned, this was my first time hearing about anything like this. They said this is the doctors requirement for all sleeve patients and there was no way around it. I am not afraid of needles, but I have never had to give myself a shot before:(. The nurse told us that this is to help prevent blood clots.

It's always best to follow surgeons orders, so maybe try to get some help on it. Is there any way they can show you how to do it, so that you are not concerned you are doing it improperly? Maybe even have them watch you as you perform it - just to give you a little piece of mind. Just a suggestion, worth asking.

Being preventative to blood clots is never a bad thing. I'm sure everything will work out fine. :)

They did show us how to administer it to ourselves, I just had not read about this on anyone else's post so I was surprised when they mentioned it at the meeting. I will definitely follow my surgeons instructions especially to prevent blood clots. Im sure I will do fine ;) .

I just finished mine a few days ago, I had to 10 days post op shots. It really is not a big deal and you can go to Lovenox.com to see the video about it. The needle is small and I never really felt it. Not my favorite thing, but it had to be done. The nurses in the hospital had me give myself the shots so that I was and expert before I went home :) Just one of those things that we do to get to the goal!

I was in the hospital Friday-Monday and was given those shots every day. How long will you be in the hospital? Can't they just do it for you :) lol?

WHOA!! This is the first time i've seen ANYONE mention self-inflicted shots!! I CANNOT deal with needles much less giving myself an injection. What's the deal with this? Is this common? Or is this one of those "depends on your situation" kind of deals?

Depends on the surgeon. I only had the shots in the hospital. It is a very tiny needle and you do not feel it at all when injected in the stomach. It is to prevent blood clots. I didn't have to take at home, but had to make sure I was up moving or if I was resting and awake to move my legs around. It's not bad at all.

My husband fell off a roof last January and had several surgeries. He ended up taking Lovenox for about a month. The shots weren't bad at all and they were very easy to administer.

I had them in the hospital and OMG you can too feel it! It's a nasty little pinch and then a small burn! You forget about it quickly afterwards though! I had cluster of tiny bruises on either side of my stomach when I left the hosptial!!

Hello all,

I get my sleeve on Monday December 20, 2010. Not all doctors require this. My doctor does and mine is a 14 day dose per day. I had to watch the DVD on how to give yourself a shot. The morning of surgery, the nurse had me do the shot so that they were sure I knew how to do it. It helps to prevent blood clots. Some days I feel it and some days I don't. They did suggest to make sure the alcohol swabbed area is dry and that will help in preventing the burning. It will leaving bruising but hey it is a blood thinner. After reading someone's post who developed a blood clot in the stomach and had to be readmitted, I am glad that this is a requirement from my doctor.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
