Sleeved Nov 16 - Readmitted to hospital 20 days later

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to update everyone and to see if anyone has had these complications...

I was sleeved Nov 16, 2010. Everything had been going great. I felt my recovery was taking slightly longer than other peoples just because I was still feeling enough pain to be taking pain meds until day 12ish. Other than that everything was normal. Until Sat 12/4 I was feeling extreme nausea and couldn't keep even a sip down, I'd throw it back up then start dry heaving. So the next day I started having horrible pain from under my rib cage down to my hips, my whole abdominal area. I was able to drink about 5oz of an EAS Protein Shake, which I sipped throughout the day. I was feeling very dehydrated at that time. Monday morning finally gets here and I call my Dr office as soon as they opened. He says I need to get to the ER ASAP. My pain level at this point was deffinatly a 10!! So they run some tests and a CT scan and find out I have a huge blood clot that has formed from the vessels in the stomach and I have pancreatitus. He said both were very painful and that I'd have to be admitted and put on blood thinkers until the clot dissolved, and NPO for the enlarged pancreaus. I might have to have a PICC line or feeding tube put in. I'm totally freaking out about both.

I'm typing all this from my phone while all drugged up, so I apologize I left out some details.. just seeing if this has happened to anyone. Because I thought I had read about everything that could go wrong... but I never read about this. I'm so sad right now and worried about what's going to happen...

Thanks for listening,

Kelli

I just sent you a personal message and then I came across this post you sent. OMG, I can't believe this!!!! I am soooooo sorry to hear this. I have definitely heard that you can get a blood clot after surgery (any surgery this is a risk). My sister developed multiple blood clots after a surgery she had for her gallbladder. I have not heard of the pancreatitis, I wonder what caused this? I will defintely be praying for you! Please keep me updated on what is going on whenever you can!

Hey I just sent u a msg back. I can't believe this is happening either. :(

I guess I knew blood clots are common after surgery, I just wasn't expecting it to happen in my stomach, ya know.. I think of them always starting in the legs. I was able to see the CT scan of it and it is huge!

@thinoneday - thanks for the cyber hugs, I'll keep u all posted.:)

I'm so sorry to hear of your complications. I've heard of pancreatitis post-sleeve, but it usually comes with gallbladder issues as well.

I'll keep you in my thoughts, and prayers for a speedy recovery. I had a pic line, and while it isn't pleasant, it gave me the necessary nutrients, and calories to help my body recover.

Wow, I appreciate you sharing this story, as I didn't know you could actually get clots around the stomach. I think you usually get warned about clots in the legs. And Pancreatitus, I wasn't too aware of either. I hope you are feeling much better now!!! So sorry you are going through this!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
