Help! Hunger and Slider food questions

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I am a week away from surgery and suddenly having doubts and fears. I am hoping/thinking that I am just having the jitters, so I am hoping this forum can lay a couple of my fears to rest.

My first big fear: slider foods. I understand that slider foods "slide" easily and don't stay in the stomach long, but can you really eat nearly as much of them as before? I worry about this because slider foods are my biggest problem. I tend to overeat on sweets, and carbs, and while I want to work on controlling it myself, I obviously have a problem or I wouldn't be here!

My other big fear: hunger! I understand that many people don't lose their hunger, and I am perfectly fine with that. But, I've read a couple of posts where people say they are hungry ALL THE TIME or hungry 1/2 hour after eating. This is not something that would help me at all. In fact, it would be much worse than what I currently experience. For example, I am on the pre-op diet right now (2 shakes plus 1 meal of meat and vegetable), and while I am hungry a lot, it comes and goes, and the longer I am on this diet, the less hungry I feel. So, for me, this would be considerably worse than what I am experiencing.

Here's what I really hope for out of the sleeve: a leg up: I am hoping that the restriction will help me to eat less in general, and that when I do give in to my cravings and eat "slider" foods, it will be far less than I could eat before (for example, I can probably eat a half a box of Cookies without any discomfort, and a whole box of cookies with *some* discomfort now. I can eat a large burger with fries and a shake now, with no problem, etc, etc.).

So, of those two things, weigh in if you can.... what is your hunger like, and what is your experience with slider foods?

thanks from the freaked-out, jittery, pre-op :-)

I am not sure what slider foods are, but I am 2 weeks post op and I can tell I CANT eat more 4tlbs of food at a time if that.

For example, today for the first time I went out to the Mall with my friend at lunch time. I offered to have lunch somewhere that had Soup. We went in a place and she ordered meat loaf and mashed potatoes that came with chicken noodle soup. I mixed about 2 tbl spoons of potatoes with about a 3rd cup of broth and I was completely satisfied with that. Sure her meat loaf looked great when it was put on the table, but I that's it, looked good. I had no desire to dig in and when I was almost finished with the potatoes/soup mix I was more than satisfied and could not finish the last two bites.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
